Job description

The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks and park-school recreation areas throughout Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

The Department of Parks & Recreation has the overall responsibility for planning, supervising and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince George’s County. The Facility Services Division (FSD) is the largest Division within this Department and is comprised of six major work areas: Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures (Trade Shops), Horticulture & Forestry, Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects (Aquatics, Heavy Equipment and Sustainability) and the Administrative section. The mission of FSD is to provide professional, high quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all parks and recreation facilities and to support the diverse work programs of the Parks & Recreation department in Prince George’s County and its customers.

The HVAC unit falls under the operational supervision of the Building & Structures section, which provides preventive maintenance, routine/emergency repair, renovations and alterations to park buildings and structures. The HVAC unit’s mission is to be responsible for the installation, maintenance and service of various heating/air conditioning systems and ventilation/refrigeration equipment in all facilities (i.e. buildings, stadiums, ice rinks, recreation centers, etc.)

As a Senior HVAC Mechanic, the major responsibilities will be to trouble-shoot HVAC problems in the field. Under general supervision, incumbents will perform the full range of difficult skilled heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) work. The incumbent will perform related plumbing, electrical and mechanical work in conjunction with the installation, maintenance and repair of heating ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment. May direct the work of the HVACR mechanic, Trades trainees and Park Maintenance workers. A specific geographical area will be assigned as your daily duties, and good working relationships must be developed with Facility managers and staff. You will be responsible for the work done within your area and will take ownership of same. Larger projects may require the assistance of an HVAC Mechanic, and the incumbent may periodically be the on-site supervisor of a project. Reads and interprets building plans, blueprints and schematic drawings to determine equipment, materials and methods needed. Responsible for maintaining inventory of power equipment, tools and ability to order the parts/supplies necessary for each job.

We are looking for someone who is willing to take initiative and wants to learn the “ins and out” of the HVAC field. You should be able to lift 100 lbs., and you must be able to work without constant supervision. Some supervisory experience is preferred, and you should be knowledgeable regarding the County’s HVAC codes and standards, as well as having knowledge of vendors and how to order parts, as necessary. A “safety first” philosophy is also required because several of our units are on rooftops – YOU CANNOT BE AFRAID OF HEIGHTS!

Salary ($52,549 - $93,069)

Hours 6:00 am - 2:45 pm

1. High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
2. Completion of an approved HVACR apprentice program or four (4) years of progressively responsible experience.
3. Two (2) years of experience at the journey level.
4. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years.
5. Valid Journey HVACR License issued by appropriate local jurisdiction.
6. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
7. Depending on area of assignment, a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements may be required.
8. Pass Commission medical examination.
