Job Description

Position Title: HVAC Technician


Department: Operations and Maintenance


Immediate Supervisor: HVAC Supervisor


Summary: This position offers support for all areas of maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs of the HVAC systems in the District buildings.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Install, repair, alter, replace and maintain environmental systems equipment and components including but not limited to: air conditioning equipment, condensers, pumps, compressors, GEO Thermal Systems, boilers and other pneumatic and electric machinery and computerized controls, install and maintain cooling tower equipment and cooling water treatment equipment.

  • Operate and control HVAC systems with the use of Johnson Controls Metasys Building Automation System (BAS).

  • Perform skilled work in the area of installation, repair, alteration, replacement and maintenance of components of environmental systems such as refrigeration, temperature control, and support systems equipment.

  • Implement preventive maintenance program, test and evaluate performance of systems using specialized equipment, repair or replace defective valves, thermostats etc.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, drawings, diagrams and equipment specifications.

  • Prepare records and service reports.

  • Provide functional supervision to outside contractors and other operation and maintenance employees.

  • Determine the amount of time and materials necessary to accomplish tasks with the least expense and downtime of equipment.

  • Build a positive working relationship with school administrators, custodians and other employees of the district.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with Supervisor and/or other on-site personnel.

  • Work independently during the normal workday and during off hours on an on-call status.

  • Comply with OSHA regulations/guidelines regarding materials and safety, as established by OSHA guidelines.

  • Participate as directed in any training and development programs identified by the Supervisor; keep current on relevant information and technology.

  • Regular and reliable attendance.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Indirect/functional supervision to outside contractors and project responsibility to other operation and maintenance employees.


Minimum Education or Experience: High school graduate or GED


HVAC Journeyman preferred

  • Possess a valid Iowa Drivers' license.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials and manipulating things. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must perform physical activities that require squatting, stooping or kneeling, climbing, lifting, balancing, and reaching above the head and forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools while climbing on a ladder. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and waist more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs. with assistance. The employee will sometimes push/pull items. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to transport supplies and equipment from one location to another.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. Work may be performed during inclement weather, with exposure to extreme temperatures and conditions including snow and ice. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. By District Board policy, the district facilities and grounds are to be drug, alcohol and tobacco free zones.
