Job summary

Newport News Public Schools in Newport News, VA is seeking an HVAC Mechanic I to perform skilled maintenance and repair of HVAC systems. The role requires inspection, installation assistance, belt replacements, lubrication, filter/coil cleaning, and attention to safety.

Normal hours are 12:00 p.m.–8:30 p.m. Mon-Fri; summer hours 6:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Mon-Thu. A high school diploma or GED and two years HVAC experience are required; valid Virginia driver’s license is needed. Apply through NNPS.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Inspect HVAC equipment and assist in installation/maintenance per manuals.
• Replace worn drive belts, adjust belt tension and align pulleys.
• Lubricate circulating pumps, motors, drive pulleys and bearings to maximize efficiency.
• Check, clean and replace filters; clean evaporator and condenser coils as needed.
• Be aware of mechanical and electrical hazards and follow safety practices.

Job Summary

Position is responsible for providing a variety of skilled work related to the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

• Requires proper inspection of all heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment. Assist in the installation and maintenance of all HVAC equipment according to manufacturers’ operation and maintenance manuals.
• Must be capable of replacing worn drive belts and properly adjust belt tension and align pulleys for proper wear.
• Understand proper lubrication procedures for circulating pumps, motors, drive pulleys and bearings to maximize efficiency and prolong the life of the equipment.
• Responsible for checking, cleaning and replacing filters in all HVAC equipment. Understand proper procedures for cleaning both evaporator and condenser coils as necessary.
• Must always be conscious of mechanical and electrical hazards for both oneself and peers.
• Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

Working Hours

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

Completion of high school or GED required. Trade school coursework in HVAC systems/installation, apprenticeship program, or applied job experience that provides the required knowledge. Thorough knowledge of practices, tools and terminology of the HVAC trade; understanding of the theory of heat exchange and air circulation and knowledge of electricity as it applies to HVAC equipment. Must have a minimum of at least two years of HVAC experience in the residential or commercial setting. Must possess a valid Virginia Driver's License.
