Job summary

Fairfax County Public Schools is seeking a skilled HVAC technician to lead the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems. Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Install, modify, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC systems.
  • Work may include evening or night shifts and emergency call-outs.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national codes is essential.

Job description

Leads and performs the skilled journey-level work required to install, modify, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, refrigeration equipment, and direct digital controls (DDC) systems.

Qualifications

Required
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
  • Three (3) years of experience in air-conditioning or HVACR, two (2) years of which shall have been at the journey level.
  • Possession of a valid EPA-approved universal refrigerant recovery certification to include types I, II, and III.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
  • May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
  • Knowledge of the methods and skills used in the repair of electrical and mechanical components, DDC, boilers, hot water/steam piping, and functioning of air-conditioning units, systems, equipment, and application-specific and basic computer programs.
  • Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals.
  • Capability to estimate time and material needs, determine when the repair is not economically practical, and perform routine tasks and arithmetic computations.
Preferred
  • Completion of an acceptable apprentice-level HVAC training program.
