Job description

Overview

University of Iowa Facilities Management seeks multiple HVAC Technician positions (HVAC II or HVAC III) to service and maintain building HVAC and refrigeration equipment on campus.

Duties
  • Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair HVAC, refrigeration, and environmental systems across campus.
  • Diagnose complex equipment problems using diagnostic tools and EPA‑approved refrigerant reclaim equipment.
  • Co‑ordinate work with other trades; operate computerized building environmental automation systems.
  • Repair or replace defective parts and equipment; maintain and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical components.
  • Use specialized testing and diagnostic equipment and read and interpret prints, schematics, and diagrams.
HVAC Technician II Duties
  • Maintain and troubleshoot environmental systems such as air conditioning equipment, chillers, condensers, pumps, fume hoods, autoclaves, environmental chambers, cascade cooling units, process water systems, compressors, HVAC controls, cooling tower equipment, heat exchangers, and heating systems (boilers, furnaces, radiant heating, heat pumps).
  • Operate and maintain heating and cooling equipment for all fuel types.
HVAC Technician III Duties
  • Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair chillers, chilled water equipment, air compressors, air dryers, pumps, chiller tubes, heat exchangers, and other emerging technology equipment.
Other Duties
  • Maintain and troubleshoot complex mechanical systems.
  • Operate computerized building environmental automation systems that control heating and cooling.
  • Use specialized testing equipment for diagnostic evaluation.
  • Read and interpret prints, schematics, and diagrams.
About Facilities Management

Facilities Management is a 500‑employee service unit that coordinates campus master planning, manages design and construction, and maintains buildings and grounds.

Schedule and Location

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Position may require overtime and standby. Location: University of Iowa campus and/or Oakdale campus.

Pay
  • HVAC Technician II: $64,790.64
  • HVAC Technician III: $70,720.56
Minimum Eligibility Requirements

HVAC Technician II

  • Six years of experience in temperature and computerized building environmental automation systems, refrigeration or air conditioning work (including apprenticeship); OR two years of experience in such systems combined with the minimum eligibility requirements of ESM I; OR four years of experience plus a Journeyman license.
  • Refrigeration certificate type 2 or higher.
  • Preferred: 2 years of college or trade school.

HVAC Technician III

  • Eight years of experience in computerized building environmental automation systems, refrigeration or air conditioning work (including apprenticeship) and two years of experience evaluating system optimization; OR two years of experience evaluating optimization plus the minimum eligibility requirements of ESM II.
  • Refrigeration certificate type 2 or higher.
  • Journeyman license required.
  • Preferred: 2 years of college or trade school.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with building automation controls.
  • Previous soldering experience.
  • Previous commercial or industrial HVAC experience.
  • Experience with hand tools, power tools, and test equipment.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Experience using computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Hydronic license.
  • Preventive maintenance and troubleshooting experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Customer interaction and team‑work skills.
  • Experience working with diverse backgrounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.
