Job summary

Iowa Department of Public Defense seeks an HVAC Technician to support Camp Dodge. You will perform advanced mechanical, electrical, plumbing, pneumatic and electronic tasks for installation, maintenance, repair and operation of HVAC systems, boilers, refrigeration, and building automation.

This role requires coordinating with multiple trades and a facility engineer on special projects, with weekend rotation.

Qualifications

• : Five years of full-time experience in installation, maintenance, repair and operation of HVAC systems plus related equipment.
• : An equivalent combination of education and experience with 30 semester hours in HVAC for each year of experience (max two years).
• : May require electrical licensing per Iowa Code.
• : Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain Class B CDL.
• : May require certifications for HVAC, boilers, and refrigeration.
• : Forklift and material handling permits as necessary.

Responsibilities

• : Install, maintain and repair air conditioning systems from large packaged units to window units.
• : Calculate, layout, estimate and install ductwork including supply/return, plenum and branches.
• : Conduct inspections, tests and diagnostics to ensure proper AC operation.
• : Charge refrigerant lines and recover refrigerant per regulatory standards.
• : Monitor diagnostics using Tridium Niagara AX/R2, JACE controllers, BACnet devices.
• : Install, maintain and repair refrigeration units and domestic appliances; manage refrigerant handling.
• : Assist Electricians with work on secondary electrical distribution systems (480V, 240V 3-phase, 120V).
• : Coordinate tasks between soldiers and civilians; liaise with Facility Engineer on special projects.
• : Be willing to work weekends/after hours on a rotational basis.

What You’ll Do

• Install, maintain and repair air conditioning systems ranging from 60 ton (+) packaged units down to window units.
• Calculate, layout, estimate, and install ductwork to include supply and return side, plenum, truck, and branch.
• Perform inspections, tests, and diagnostic procedures to ensure proper operation of AC equipment.
• Charge refrigerant lines and recover refrigerant according to environmental compliance regulatory standards.
• Monitor and perform diagnostic procedures using systems such as Tridium Niagara AX framework, Tridium Niagara R2 framework, JACE controllers, and BACnet devices
• Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration units such as coolers, freezers, and domestic appliances. Charge and recover refrigerant according to environmental compliance regulatory standards.
• Assist Electricians in performing work normally associated with the secondary electrical distribution system. This system includes 480-volt, 240-volt three phase, and 120 volt (and larger) single phase.
• Coordinate job site tasks between soldiers and civilians of various trades in logical construction sequence and priority.
• Work closely with Facility Engineer on assigned special projects.

Location and hours: Camp Dodge 7105 NW 70 th Ave. Johnston, IA 50131, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Mon.-Fri.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Experience equal to five years of full-time work in the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, boilers, refrigeration, ancillary equipment, and building automated systems related to HVAC; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting 30 semester hours of accredited post high school education in HVAC for each year of the required experience to a maximum substitution of two years. Additional Qualification Requirements

• Within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority, persons in this class may be required to obtain a license to perform electrical work in accordance with Chapter 103, Iowa Code.
• Within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority, certain employees in this class may be required to obtain a Fire Sprinkler Installer and Maintenance License in accordance with Chapter 100D, Iowa Code.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must be able to obtain Class B commercial driver’s license.
• Must be able to obtain certifications as required by regulatory authorities pertaining to HVAC, boilers, and refrigeration.
• Must be capable of obtaining forklift and other material handling equipment operator’s permits as necessary.

NOTE: Must be willing to work weekends and after hours on a rotational basis performing boiler operations and must be willing to respond to alarm pager on weekends and after hours on a rotational basis.
