Job Summary
At Polar Express, our Service Technician performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. The technician provides exceptional customer service and educates customers on technical and investment decisions by offering multiple options and solutions during service calls in customers' homes.
Primary Responsibilities
- Service, repair, and propose replacement of gas furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, electric furnaces, packaged terminal units, ductless split systems, humidification and dehumidification equipment, electronic air cleaners, air purification systems, and residential control systems including Evolution and zoning systems.
- Troubleshoot, adapt, and resolve all issues to ensure proper equipment functioning.
- Test systems after service/repair to confirm proper operation.
- Perform inspections to prevent future issues.
- Explain services and repairs to customers.
- Assist customers in making purchasing decisions through detailed education and cost/benefit analysis.
- Accurately document system components, services performed, discussions, and costs in invoices.
- Debrief after each service call with dispatch.
- Submit parts receipts, packing slips, contracts, and invoices daily.
- Wear floor savers when working in clients' homes.
- Maintain cleanliness of work area after job completion.
- Maintain the company vehicle's cleanliness and organization.
- Uphold a professional image by wearing approved apparel, following safety policies, adhering to performance and ethical standards, and respecting customers' property.
- Participate in all company-sponsored training classes.
- Assist in mentoring and training maintenance and service technicians.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Minimum of 2 years of verifiable experience as a Service Technician in residential service and maintenance.
- Knowledge of operational fundamentals of residential heating, cooling, and ventilation equipment.
- Ability to mentor and train less-experienced technicians.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Possession of appropriate trade tools.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to pass background check and drug screening.
Environmental Conditions
- Extreme temperatures.
- Climbing, heavy lifting, loud noise, crawling, working in confined spaces, pushing/pulling, carrying equipment, bending, turning, kneeling.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders and stairs.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and maneuver in attics, basements, and crawl spaces.
- Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
- Normal or corrected vision for close, distance, and peripheral vision with depth perception.
Educational/Certification Requirements
- GED or High School Diploma.
- EPA certification.
- Associate degree in a related field and NATE certification are preferred.
