The Opportunity

This position works in the HVAC/Refrigeration Group at our Abbott Park, IL location in the GES Global Engineering Services division. The HVAC/R Mechanic II provides 24‑hour, 7‑day maintenance support to manufacturing, R&D laboratories, warehouses, and office facilities across Abbott Park and associated Lake County facilities.

What You’ll Work On

• Perform hardware, operating systems, and maintenance work on a variety of HVAC/R equipment and systems including production, lab, and facility equipment.
• Act as a multi‑skill tradesperson performing mechanical, pipefitting, building maintenance and other tasks; may lead a crew of two or more.
• Liaise and coordinate work assigned to the crew.
• Ensure GMP and safe‑work policies and procedures are followed.
• Participate in team meetings and propose methods to improve productivity, reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction.
• Perform troubleshooting, parts ordering, and installation on equipment such as motors, fans, electrical control devices, compressors, pumps, walk‑in coolers, and freezers.
• Carry out preventive and demand maintenance on plant HVAC/R equipment such as fans, valves, actuators, and VAV controllers.
• Install bearings, seals, belts, gaskets using gauges, tools, and test equipment such as vacuum and pressure gauges, leak detectors, torque wrenches, multimeters, amp meters.
• Perform mechanical overhauls and preventive maintenance on all HVAC equipment.
• Apply HVAC/R theory and maintain air handling systems in commercial and industrial environments.
• Brazing and soldering of heating and cooling coils.
• Install refrigeration equipment and accessories following Abbott Engineering Standards.
• Evaluate resources and make safety and company‑standard decisions independently.
• Use CMMS functions for refrigeration maintenance, PM, and related activities.
• Report to Group Leader, Section Manager, or Department Manager.
• Operate under the direction of the HVAC/R Mechanic I until experience allows progression.

Required Qualifications

• High school education or equivalent.
• Three or more years of formal training and responsibility in commercial or industrial HVAC/R maintenance.
• Demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of HVAC/R system equipment maintenance and teamwork.
• Federal EPA certification for operation of refrigerant reclaiming equipment and proper refrigerant usage and disposal is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s degree preferred.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Great customer‑service skills.
