Description

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) is seeking a HVAC Technician I to join our Facility Team of tradesman. In this position you will perform a variety of tasks related to the installation, maintenance, and ongoing projects associated with keeping our environment at its best possible quality for our patients and staff. You will work directly with the HVAC II technician to maintain current systems, patient areas, troubleshoot equipment, as well as guide vendors on site for large projects, and develop a keen knowledge of the facility.

Schedule: 7:30-4pm, Monday - Friday

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

Installs heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including controls and related fixtures such as air and water filters and piping by using refrigeration, pipe fitting and structural layout techniques, blueprints, appropriate machines, tools, and work aids to join tubing and/or compressor and condenser units; and to connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulating ventilation fans to electrical power.

Checks equipment for malfunctioning by observing pressure and vacuum gauges and other indicators; by adjusting controls in testing joints and connections for gas leaks; by injecting refrigerant and adjustment valves, controls, and pumps; and by using testing equipment such as voltmeters, am probes, etc., to ensure proper operation.

Maintains, rebuilds, and repairs by replacing worn or defective parts-such as switches, fuses, thermostats and electrical wiring, by pumping specified gas or fluids into systems by adding necessary liquids; by lubricating motors and bearings; and by changing filters.

Calculates heat loads for new installations; analyzes and treats both open and closed water systems such as cooling towers by adding algericides to prevent the spread of airborne bacteria.

Performs related work such as making and assembling metal ducts and chassis parts for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems; drilling holes for mounting brackets; screwing, boring, riveting and welding parts to assemble structural and functional components such as motors, controls switches and gauges; and installing shells and cabinets of systems.

Maintain equipment for distribution of heat and air conditioning throughout entire facility.

Maintain ice machine in wards throughout hospital, also in Operating Room, Outpatient Department, and Kitchen.

Maintain ventilating and exhaust equipment throughout facility.

Required Qualifications:

Implement standard preventive maintenance for HVAC systems and related electrical systems.

Lubricate machinery and equipment effectively.

Maintain small hand and power tools.

Follow safety practices and procedures for HVAC and electrical systems installation, maintenance, and repair.

Utilize terminology, coding, symbols, and standard abbreviations for HVAC systems.

Apply techniques for HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair.

Perform pipe threading methods.

Operate heating, refrigeration, ventilation, and air conditioning machinery.

Manage electrical, electronic, and pneumatic HVAC control systems.

Use electrical test equipment like volt meters and am probes.

Understand and apply laws, rules, and regulations governing Facilities Department activities.

Read and interpret specifications, operation manuals, and blueprints.

Follow oral and written instructions accurately.

Demonstrate mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.

Utilize standard office filing systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

Operates computer software programs effectively, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, to maintain records, data bases, and communications.

Familiar working in healthcare facility environment

About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part- time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A certificate or diploma from a recognized institution above the high school level, as evidence of completion of a two year program in refrigeration and heating, may be substituted for the required experience.

Education toward such a certificate or diploma will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Special Requirements: Based on assignment, a current and valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician's License may be required.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range
