Ball State University is seeking a full-time HVAC-R Technician for the District Energy Station North campus. Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repair on HVAC/R equipment and report work on Preventive Maintenance Forms.
  • Install, adjust, and repair HVAC/R systems and related appliances.
  • Troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair controls on HVAC/R equipment; read gauges, meters, and thermostats.
  • Inspect, maintain, lubricate pumps, motors, dampers, coils, belts, and related equipment.
  • Maintain and operate central chilled plants and distribution systems; work with cooling towers and control systems.
  • Read and interpret drawings and specifications for HVAC/R equipment.

What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Install, adjust, and repair refrigeration, heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems, including but not limited to ice machines, freezers, refrigerators, drinking fountains, and other appliances. Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, stand and/or stoop for long periods of time, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate various hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, and measuring instrumentation and equipment. Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, stand and/or stoop for long periods of time, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate various hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, and measuring instrumentation and equipment. Maintain and operate central chilling plant equipment, geothermal heat pump chillers, fluid coolers, cooling towers, and the chilled and hot water distribution system, including large tonnage centrifugal chillers, heat pump chillers, air dirt separators, distribution pumps, and associated control systems. Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, stand and/or stoop for long periods of time, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate various hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, and measuring instrumentation and equipment.   6. Perform preventive maintenance and repair on swimming pool and fountain mechanical equipment, including pumps, motors, heaters, heat exchangers, filters, valves, and related equipment. Water treatment, water chemistry, chemical dosing, bacteriological testing, and water or basin cleaning for pools, fountains, and other water features are excluded from this classification. Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, stand and/or stoop for long periods of time, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate various hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, and measuring instrumentation and equipment.   8. Acquire and maintain knowledge of various job-related chemicals, environmental concerns, and technological improvements and advancements, including refrigerant transition requirements for low global warming potential refrigerants. Requires the physical ability to finger, grasp, stand, and exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color, read small print, and perceive depth.   9. Inspect, maintain, repair, and install insulation on water lines, steam lines, pumps, and other HVAC/R related equipment. Work on steam systems under this position is limited to low pressure systems operating at or below 15 pounds per square inch. High pressure steam generation and distribution remain the responsibility of the Heat Plant and District Energy Station classifications. Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, hear, stand and/or stoop for extended periods of time, and exert in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate various hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, and measuring instrumentation and equipment.
  10. Operate building automation systems related to HVAC/R, including computer hardware and software. Requires the ability to efficiently operate a computer keyboard as prescribed by management. Task requires the physical ability to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, hear, stand and/or stoop for extended periods of time, and exert in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate various hand and power tools, measuring instrumentation and equipment.   11. Construct, fabricate, remodel, maintain, and repair air system fabrications for HVAC/R systems as directed. Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, stand and/or stoop for long periods of time, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate high pressure water hoses, various hand and power tools, ladders, and measuring instrumentation and equipment.
  12. Maintain accurate records of work orders, material usage, and refrigerant purchase, use, disposal in compliance with EPA recordkeeping requirements under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act and applicable HFC regulations. Requires the physical ability to kneel, reach, stand, walk, finger, grasp, talk, hear, and exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to efficiently operate a computer keyboard as prescribed by management. Employee is exposed to inside environmental conditions.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned. May require any or all of the above-mentioned abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  2. Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning; or five (5) years of commercial HVAC or refrigeration experience, including experience with low pressure chillers; or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable job knowledge can be acquired as determined by BallState University.
  3. EPA Section608 Universal certification as noted in federal register 40CFR82 Sub PartF to handle all refrigerants. Proof of certification type must be provided upon request. Universal certification is required because this position services equipment in both high pressure (TypeII) and low pressure (TypeIII) categories, including chillers.
  4. Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, University policies, procedures, and communications, and perform mathematical functions.
  5. Scissor lift operator certification in accordance with OSHA and ANSI standards, or the ability to obtain certification within ninety (90) days of hire.
  6. Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy.
  7. Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty.
  8. Must be 18 years or older.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Vocational School Training.
  2. Experience with electronic controls for HVAC systems.
  3. Over six (6) years HVAC/R experience.
  4. Experience with centrifugal chillers with over 1000 tons in capacity.
  5. Experience with geothermal heat pump and ground source district energy systems.
  6. HVAC journey worker certification through a US Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program.
  7. R-410A safety training and training in the safe handling of A2L (mildly flammable) refrigerants.
  8. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  9. Electrical systems experience.
