Job description

HVAC Project Manager At Johnson Controls, you will lead HVAC controls and building automation projects from planning through commissioning and closeout, coordinating customer communication, field execution, and project financial performance. This role combines technical delivery, jobsite leadership, and documentation discipline to help ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and in line with contract requirements.

Role Overview Under general direction, the HVAC Project Manager serves as the project leader for assigned control systems work. You will manage scope, schedule, resources, subcontractors, materials, and financial results while supporting hardware design, system programming, installation coordination, commissioning, and warranty handoff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead assigned HVAC controls projects from planning and execution through final completion and project closeout.
  • Coordinate or oversee hardware design, system programming, installation coordination, system and network commissioning, and closeout activities.
  • Manage project financial performance, including costs, billings, collections, profitability, cash flow, and monthly forecasting.
  • Maintain regular communication with customers throughout the project and support timely issue resolution.
  • Evaluate scope changes, client bulletins, field directives, and schedule impacts to pursue change orders as needed.
  • Coordinate material selection, ordering, delivery schedules, budget control, and vendor pricing.
  • Secure and review pricing, scope, terms, and conditions from subcontractors, suppliers, and mechanical and electrical vendors.
  • Provide jobsite coordination for panel and field device locations and ensure installation meets project requirements and Johnson Controls standards.
  • Direct subcontractors, electrical installers, technicians, designers, and administrative support as needed to keep work on track.
  • Support software loading, device verification, commissioning, and validation of complete system functionality.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate as-built, commissioning, billing, training, warranty, and closeout documentation.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical assistance to field personnel and subcontractors.
  • Deliver site-specific training to owners and operators and ensure appropriate manuals and system documentation are provided.
  • Send warranty communication upon substantial completion and support proper warranty execution.
  • Follow applicable state, local, and federal requirements while maintaining a high standard of safety and ethics on the job.
How You Will Do It

Own the outcome with accountability, safety, and integrity by making disciplined decisions and keeping the work aligned with project goals and contract requirements.

Stay close to the work and remove obstacles by coordinating early and often with customers, subcontractors, and internal teams.

Improve every day by identifying issues quickly, addressing gaps in scope or execution, and using practical problem-solving to keep the project moving.

Win as one team by building trust across technicians, designers, installers, suppliers, and customer stakeholders.

Focus on what matters by keeping priorities clear, maintaining strong jobsite coordination, and supporting timely decisions that protect schedule and margin.

Communicate design intent and system operation clearly so both technical and non-technical audiences understand what will be delivered and how it will operate.

Keep the project organized through accurate planning, timely follow-up, and consistent documentation from kickoff through closeout.

Qualifications
  • Technical associate degree with two years of field experience, or four years of equivalent related field experience in the HVAC industry.
  • Knowledge of control theory and HVAC systems.
  • Experience managing projects related to mechanical systems and building automation systems.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical material to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong personal computer skills in MS Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Project, as well as Adobe Writer, Visio, and the basic Windows environment.
  • Ability to work safely and maintain a high degree of regard for employee and subcontractor safety.
Nice to Have
