Job summary

Trane Technologies in Illinois is seeking an HVAC Project Engineer to translate early project concepts into defined system solutions and pre-construction documents. The HVAC Project Engineer is a detail-oriented and proactive individual who supports project planning, scope definition, coordination, and analysis after an initial project concept has been identified. The role works closely with project developers, estimators, project managers, engineers, subcontractors, clients, and operations leaders to help ensure projects are clearly scoped, budgeted, scheduled, and prepared for execution.

The HVAC Project Engineer plays an important role in translating early project needs into actionable pre-construction documents, supporting contractor engagement, identifying risks, and aligning scope, cost, schedule, and constructability expectations before handing off to the project execution team. The ideal candidate has strong technical, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to prepare basic project definition documents, review drawings and specifications, support estimating efforts, coordinate site walks, and contribute to design and constructability reviews.

What You Will Do
  • Translate project concepts provided by the Project Developer into defined HVAC system solutions through the application of Trane products, controls, and complementary systems, supporting scope development, technical review, and pre-construction planning.
  • Partner with the project team to further define project scope, develop installation budgets, and translate early project concepts into actionable scopes of work; for smaller projects, prepare basic schematics, outline specifications, and subcontractor bid packages to support contractor site walks and competitive bidding.
  • Gather and evaluate project data, drawings, specifications, and existing site conditions to develop project scopes and cost estimates.
  • Analyze field conditions to identify potential scope gaps, constructability issues, conflicts, risks, and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Lead or support pre-bid meetings with project teams and subcontractors to review project scope, existing conditions, strategy, and project requirements.
  • Coordinate subcontractor outreach, pricing, and qualification efforts, and support cost optimization through quote evaluation.
  • Apply knowledge of construction methods and practices to communicate effectively with subcontractors and guide them in providing complete and accurate proposal information.
  • Support decisions related to outsourced engineering needs and collaborate with operations team to validate costs and improve project execution readiness.
  • Participate in client meetings, presentations, and strategy discussions, and support project turnover documentation and transition to project management and field operations teams.
What You Will Bring
  • Must have a general knowledge of basic engineering, electricity, mechanical HVAC systems and the building construction industry.
  • Understanding of construction methods/practices and ability to communicate with and direct subcontractors in an effort to obtain critical proposal information.
  • Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Construction or Engineering Technology, or other related areas; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for a minimum of 12 months, with no major or frequent traffic violations including, but not limited to: DUI, Hit & Run, License Suspension, Reckless / Carless Driving, or multiple smaller infractions or preventable collisions in the previous 3 years.
