The Facilities Management Division is seeking a highly qualified HVAC Mechanic. The HVAC Mechanics position to provide a variety of HVAC maintenance at our West District Maintenance Office. Duties include the following:
- Maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment in commercial buildings including monitoring and operating building control systems.
- Installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of a variety of cooling and heating equipment including split system refrigeration units and air-conditioning equipment ranging in varying sizes up to large commercial chilled water systems throughout the district.
- Diagnosing electrical, mechanical and controls issues for reciprocating and centrifugal chiller systems up to 1500 tons.
- Repairing or replacing pneumatic electric/electronic controllers.
- Inspecting and adjusting refrigeration, air-conditioning and heating equipment and controls to ensure efficient operations.

Job Description
General Functions
Performs skilled mechanical work in the operation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating equipment.
This is skilled work at the experienced worker level in operating, maintaining and repairing refrigeration, air conditioning and heating equipment in County buildings.
An employee in a position allocated to this class performs various duties involving the installation, maintenance and repair of a variety of cooling and heating equipment requiring the services of a certified mechanic. Work involves maintaining and repairing refrigeration units ranging in size from standard refrigerators to walk-in freezers and air conditioning equipment ranging in size from domestic window units to commercial systems.
Work assignments are received by means of written job orders or oral instructions and work in performed under the general supervision of a higher-grade employee who reviews work upon completion for conformance with established processes and procedures.
Representative Duties/Assignments
- Maintenance and repair of boilers and mechanical equipment in the central energy plants including monitoring and operation of building control systems.
- Installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of a variety of cooling and heating equipment including split system refrigeration units and air-conditioning equipment ranging in various sizes up to large commercial chilled water systems throughout the district.
- Diagnosing electrical, mechanical and controls issues for reciprocating and centrifugal systems up to 1,500 tons.
- Repairing or replacing pneumatic electric/electronic controllers.
- Inspecting and adjusting refrigeration, air-conditioning and heating equipment and controls to ensure efficient operations. Also trains and supervises the work of lower level trades personnel.
- Read blueprints and schematic drawings to determine location, size, capacity and type of component needed to repair equipment.
- May install new air conditioning and refrigeration units and run necessary duct work.
- Work emergency after-hours standby on a rotational basis.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a Trade School and two years of experience in the operation and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Two additional years of experience may be substituted for the trade school requirement.
Must posses Universal EPA Section 608 certification;
OR Type I AND Type II EPA Section 608 certification.
Applicants with only Type II EPA Section 608 certification, if selected, must achieve Type I certification within 2 months of hire.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License by date of hire.
May be required to perform mandatory Emergency Standby Duty.
Preferences
- Skill-trade experience performing highly skilled journeyman level HVAC work, maintaining, installing, altering, and repairing commercial HVAC systems and equipment (condensers, air handlers, chillers, cooling towers, etc.)
- Knowledge of building maintenance in a multi-trade environment on facilities, buildings and building systems.
- Experience maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing BacNet based Building Automation Systems such as Trane, Johnson Controls, Automated Logic, Reliable Controls, etc.
- Willingness to be sent on maintenance calls and assist other skilled trades’ personnel when needed.
- Ability to work flexible hours to include weekends, holidays, shifts, standby and after-hours due to operational requirements.
- Writing, communication, and entry level computer skills.
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to work in a team environment.

Standard work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work hours may include, weekends, after-hours, and post hurricane response due to operational needs.
Initial area of assignment is West District however, this position is subject to assignment at any Facilities Management location due to project, task, or operational requirements.
