Key Responsibilities
The HVAC Mechanic III performs advanced, senior‑level work in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Key duties include:
- Installation, adjustment, alteration, inspection, maintenance, repair, and restoration of chilled water systems, direct‑exchange systems, refrigerated systems, heating systems (including boilers/steam systems), and automated controls.
- Overseeing and assigning work to other HVAC staff, scheduling daily and weekly tasks, and maintaining accurate records of equipment performance and work completed.
- Administering preventative maintenance schedules, monitoring environmental controls, and performing energy‑efficiency assessments.
- Coordinating parts, materials, and procurement, including communicating needs to supply or warehouse personnel.
- Training and mentoring colleagues on HVAC operations and tool usage, and leading HVAC projects.
- Responding to weekend or after‑hours callouts and maintaining minimal supervision while exercising independent judgment.
- Participating in disaster response, continuity of operations, and emergency readiness as required.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
- Attend work regularly and be available for a rotating schedule, extended shifts, or overtime.
- Perform inspections, maintenance, repairs, and replacements of HVAC components such as coils, evaporators, condensers, fans, compressors, and refrigeration units.
- Document work orders, maintain records of repairs, and oversee record‑keeping accuracy.
- Lead and supervise other HVAC personnel, ensuring quality of work and reporting significant issues to supervisors.
- Develop long‑range maintenance plans and recommend energy‑efficiency improvements.
- Maintain safe and efficient HVAC operations in compliance with life‑safety code standards and applicable regulations.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and safety equipment; clean, store, and maintain tools and equipment.
- Manage environmental control systems, troubleshoot equipment, and monitor air quality.
- Maintain accurate logs of temperature, oil levels, pressures, and other relevant data.
- Assist in disaster response and continuity operations, possibly requiring alternate shift patterns.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
- Expertise in installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration systems.
- In-depth knowledge of life‑safety code standards and HVAC control systems.
- Strong diagnostic skills and ability to troubleshoot and solve malfunctions.
- Proficiency with tools, test equipment, and preventive maintenance procedures.
- Ability to read, interpret, and work from drawings, schematics, or sketches.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Self‑directed and teamwork capabilities, including training others.
- Physical stamina for standing, bending, lifting (50–100 lb.) and working in confined spaces.
- English language proficiency preferred.
- Basic mathematical competency.
Licensure, Certifications & Requirements
- Valid Texas driver’s license (or equivalent) within 90 days of hire.
- EPA Section 608 Technician Certification (Universal) within 6 months of hire.
- R410A certification preferred.
- North American Technician Excellence (NATE) or HVAC Excellence certifications preferred.
- Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician or Contractor license preferred.
- HVAC Contractor License preferred.
Initial Screening Criteria
- At least two years of HVAC mechanic or technician experience.
- At least two years in commercial HVAC system installation, diagnosis, and repair.
- Experience using HVAC tools and working from blueprints preferred.
- Associate degree in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration preferred.
Additional Information
- Background check, drug screening, and registry checks are required.
- Applicants must meet age, immunization, and other state and HHSC policies.
- Compliance with the HHSC immunization policy and state hospital procedures is mandatory.
- Desirable military or veteran experience will be considered.
