Job summary

Fairfield University is seeking a qualified HVAC technician to perform routine maintenance and repairs on campus heating and air conditioning systems. The role requires reading electrical and mechanical drawings, working with low voltage/motor controls, and familiarity with DDC controls.

The position is a 3rd shift role within the Energy Department, requiring a Connecticut driver’s license in good standing and a high school diploma.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required; Connecticut State HVAC license (D2) preferred.
  • Experience in a systems-oriented HVAC environment with basic servicing knowledge.
  • Desirable EPA/OSHA or state licenses; valid CT driver’s license in good standing.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine repairs and preventive maintenance on campus HVAC equipment.
  • Read electrical and mechanical drawings and interpret low-voltage and motor controls; work with DDC systems.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of equipment rooms and keep accurate maintenance records.
  • Assist with installation of new or repaired equipment utilizing electrical and mechanical skills.
  • Provide backup support to supervisors and coordinate with contractors as needed.
  • Participate in department meetings and contribute to system upgrades and procedures.

BASIC FUNCTION

Performs routine repairs and providespreventative maintenance on all heating, ventilating and airconditioning equipment; possesses familiarity with and ability toread electrical and mechanical drawings and is familiar with lowvoltage controls, motor controls and DDC controls; responsible forthe cleanliness and safety of equipment in designated buildings;completes documentation; provides backup support and interacts withvarious supervisors.

UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS

Work on roofs and climb ladders. Must be available for emergency call-ins. Must operate a motorvehicle. Capable of working alone and able to lift reasonableamounts of weight with no physical restrictions; must cover anyshift due to vacation and/or illness.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL NEEDED
EDUCATION

High School diploma, some trade school preferred. Connecticut State HVAC license required D2.

EXPERIENCE

Experience in a systems-oriented environmentwith some limited exposure to servicing; familiarity with tools and instrumentsrelated to HVAC industry. Demonstrates knowledge of electricaltechniques and ability to read floor plans etc. Possession of EPA,OSHA or state licenses or certifications is desirable. Must have avalid State of Connecticut driver’s license in good standing and bein good physical condition.

SCHEDULE

This is a 3rd shift position. The EnergyDepartment workweek is on a rotating two (2) week schedule thatprovides employees work every other weekend as follows:

Schedule days of work – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday,Sunday / scheduled days off Thursday, Friday; followed by scheduleddays of work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday /scheduled days off Saturday, Sunday.

Supervisor, HVAC

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. To perform routine repairs and provide preventativemaintenance on all heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment located in campus buildings, dormitories, townhouses,apartment complex and the Central Utilities Facilities complex.

  • Maintaining air handling units with filter replacements,pneumatic controls, exhaust fans, etc.
  • Familiarity with and ability to read electrical and mechanicalDrawings.
  • Familiarity with low voltage controls and motor controls;familiarity with DDC controls (e.g., Alterton and CarrierComfortworks),
  • Ensuring the adequate operation, temperature, pressure andsafety of equipment,
  • Notifying supervisor of any abnormal pressures and temperaturesbefore adjusting.
  • Interacting with contractors as needed.

2. Assist on installations of new or repaired equipmentutilizing knowledge of electrical and mechanicaltechniques.

3. To be responsible for the cleanliness and safety of equipmentrooms in designated buildings.

4. To complete appropriate documentation. Thisinvolves:

  • Assessing and completing requisitions on supplies needed forservicing,
  • Maintaining and logging accurate records on malfunctions andrepairs.

5. To provide backup support if the Associate Director of EnergyServices and the Supervisor, HVAC are absent.

6. To interact with the Associate Director of Energy Servicesand the Supervisor HVAC on major equipment problems andrecommending corrective action.

7. To participate in the growth and development of thedepartment. This involves:

  • Participating in regularly scheduled staff meetings andattending seminars as needed,
  • Promoting an image of efficiency and courtesy throughout theuniversity community and consistent with the department’smission.
  • Providing recommendations on system modifications, upgrades,policies and procedures.

8. To promote safe and secure working conditions. Thisinvolves:

  • Promoting the proper utilization of equipment andmaterials.
  • Reporting immediately to supervisor any unsafe workingconditions.

9. To perform other related duties as dictated or directed by responsibilities.
