The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking Facility Maint Techs to support campus HVAC and refrigeration systems. Candidates will perform troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance on various mechanical systems. Applicants must meet educational requirements and possess EPA certification.
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,000 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION, PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN MONTHS OF HIRE:

This recruitment is for three (3) Facility Maint Tech – MechTrd – Journey positions. By applying, you will be considered for all three (3) positions.
Supports campus HVAC systems, refrigeration equipment, and complex air drying equipment. Responsibilities include performing preventive maintenance on and making repairs to complex refrigerated air drying equipment, DX units, package units, ice machines, Liebert systems, dehumidification systems, and small chiller systems; troubleshooting complex control circuits; replacing compressors; repairing refrigerant leaks; replacing fan/blower motors; changing out various mechanical and electrical controls; and maintaining EPA refrigerant management logs.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Experience in the HVAC/Refrigeration field and EPA refrigerant certification. Ability to read various types of refrigerant gauges, including subheat and supercooling. Troubleshooting skills for HVAC/Refrigeration equipment. Proficiency with a multimeter and knowledge of testing methods for electronic/electrical components. Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings. Experience in refrigerant recovery and maintaining a refrigerant log. Competence in using Windows PCs, tablets, and smartphones to access UNC’s maintenance system. Excellent customer service skills.
May require working in active high containment labs, which involves baseline blood draws, physical exams, vaccines, annual medical certification, respirator fit testing, and specialized training. Entry into such labs requires escort, respirator use, safety attire, and possibly shower in/out.
May also require working in healthcare facilities, with vaccination requirements (varicella, flu, COVID-19), tuberculosis testing, and medical certification.
Must be able to serve as a mandatory employee, reporting to work even during adverse weather or emergencies. On-call duty on a rotating basis, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with emergency response responsibilities.
Must possess or obtain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License prior to start. EPA refrigerant certification must be obtained within the first year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Troubleshooting and repairing large DX units, refrigeration systems, variable refrigerant flow systems, dehumidification systems, boilers, refrigerators, ice machines, and large air dryers. Experience in electrical, plumbing, fabrication, and installation.
Required Licenses / Certifications / Physical & Mental Requirements: Ability to move objects weighing up to lbs., work from ladders, outdoors in adverse weather, wear respirators and PPE such as safety shoes, eye protection, and arc flash gear.
