Job description

Edo is an independent company with strategic investment from McKinstry and Avista.

Decarbonizing our electricity system is foundational to reducing our collective greenhouse gas emissions. At Edo, we work every day to create an energy system that is reliable, equitable, and carbon-free.

The fundamental infrastructure and regulatory compact of our electrical grid were designed for a different time and is hindering our ability to achieve our environmental and economic goals. We cannot solve this problem at the individual building scale - it’s not economically or technologically feasible. Edo will empower utilities and built environment leaders through a partnership model that unlocks rapid innovation towards the grid of the future. We must reimagine a physical and virtual grid that connects nodes of prosumers. We will develop the technology and knowledge platform necessary to achieve impact through scale.

The Opportunity with Edo

We are adding an HVAC Controls Engineer to our growing Edo division in Los Angeles. Commercial and industrial buildings currently consume energy with no visibility to larger utility constraints like generation and transmission congestion. Utilities produce energy with no visibility into how and where energy is being consumed by end users. Edo provides software-based energy management tools and services to transform how buildings consume and produce energy, and how they communicate with utilities.

The HVAC Controls Engineer will be part of Edo’s Research and Development (R&D) Team. This position will be responsible for developing new HVAC control logic to improve energy efficiency and optimally shift and shed electrical load in buildings. We are looking for candidates with industry experience in designing and implementing HVAC control sequences, and time-series data analysis using programming languages like Python, Matlab, R or similar.

  1. Design, implement and optimize HVAC control sequences for existing buildings, with a focus on shifting and shedding electrical load and improving energy efficiency.
  2. Develop control sequences that co-optimize electricity use in buildings with on-site distributed energy resources (DERs) like rooftop photovoltaics (PV), batteries, and electric vehicle charging systems.
  3. Evaluate the performance of control logic by developing custom time series data analysis tools in Python.
  4. Collaborate with Edo’s software development team to deploy and evaluate machine learning based control algorithms.
  5. Collaborate with Edo’s engineering team to remotely evaluate HVAC system performance.
  6. Present your results to internal and external teams.

What You Need to Succeed at Edo

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (architectural, mechanical, operations research or related), computer science, physics, or closely related quantitative field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with designing HVAC controls, monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx), or building energy engineering.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and optimizing HVAC control sequences to improve energy efficiency and enhance indoor air quality.
  • Three or more years of experience with programming in Python, Matlab, R or similar.
  • Three or more years of experience with time series data analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Enjoys collaborative problem solving and fosters a creative and inclusive company culture.

When it comes to the basics, we have you covered:

  • Competitive pay
  • 401(k) with employer match and profit-sharing plan
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Comprehensive medical, prescription, dental, and vision with low or zero deductible options and low out of pocket maximums

People come first at Edo, and we go beyond the basic benefits with:

  • Family formation benefits, including adoption and IVF assistance
  • Up to 16 weeks paid parental leave
  • “Building Good” paid community service time
  • Learning and advancement opportunities via McKinstry University
  • McKinstry Moves onsite gyms or reimbursement for remote workers

See benefit plan documents for complete details.

If you’re driven by our vision to build a thriving planet together, Edo is the place to build your career.
