Job summary

AIR Carolinas is seeking a Controls Application Engineer in Charlotte, NC to design software programs for HVAC controls, offering expert advisory support to customers and internal teams. The role may supervise the Controls Team and requires strong problem-solving and collaboration across departments.

The candidate should have a 2- or 4-year degree with 5+ years of leadership experience, plus knowledge of Tridium/Niagara, CPT, Reliable, KMC, and AAON Controllers.

Qualifications

  • 2- or 4-year degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience.
  • Programming knowledge and certifications with Tridium/Niagara, CPT, Reliable, KMC, etc. a plus.
  • Configuration knowledge of AAON Controllers, etc. a plus.
  • Valid in‑state Driver’s License and clean driving record required. Extensive travel is required.

Responsibilities

  • Designs software programs for controls to match customer needs.
  • Ensure programs continue to work properly and plan upgrades and maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot issues and calibrate equipment.
  • Collaborate with Service Leadership to improve productivity and expand markets.
  • Coordinate with Project Manager on scheduling, invoicing and billing.

Job Description

The Controls Application Engineer designs software programs for controls related to a specific HVAC system to improve functionality. This position provides technical advice and expertise on specific controls to support our internal and external customers, frequently assessing the functionality of the program to maximize the unit’s capability to the customer’s satisfaction. The Controls Application Engineer may supervise and coordinate the activities of the Controls Team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Gathers information from customers on their needs and designs and develops a software program for controls that match their needs.
  • Assures the program continues to work properly, while making recommendations for future testing, upgrades and maintenance.
  • Frequently dials in through a cradle point to troubleshoot issues.
  • Confers with Service & Controls Leadership to develop methods and procedures to increase productivity, sales, expand markets, and promote business.
  • Works directly with the Service Coordinator and/or Project Manager, providing guidance when needed regarding scheduling, invoicing and billing issues.
  • Provides technicians with assistance in performing difficult or complicated duties.
  • Attends company meetings to exchange product information and coordinate work activities with other departments.
  • Coordinates safety training and professional development for the Team.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Experience and Requirements
  • 2- or 4-year degree from an accredited trade school, college, or university preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience.
  • Programming knowledge and certifications with Tridium/Niagara, CPT, Reliable, KMC, etc. a plus.
  • Configuration knowledge of AAON Controllers, etc. a plus.
  • Valid in‑state Driver’s License and clean driving record required. Carrier requirements are 21 years of age with a minimum of 3 years driving experience. Extensive travel is required with occasional overnight stays.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
  • Must be able to remain stationary for 60 percent of the time while operating a computer and performing office work, frequently move about in tight and cramped spaces.
  • Must routinely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Works in various settings, with some outdoor exposure during the day; noise level usually low to moderate.
