Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), a world‑renowned scientific research institution, is seeking an HVAC Apprentice to join our Facilities team. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to build a long‑term career in the skilled trades through hands‑on training, mentorship, and practical experience.

Working alongside experienced HVAC professionals, the HVAC Apprentice will receive comprehensive training in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. The successful candidate will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to advance into a Mechanic, HVAC position.

Position Responsibilities

• Learn to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC systems and related equipment.
• Assist with preventive maintenance and service of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
• Gain experience working in residential, commercial, and institutional environments.
• Learn to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
• Apply mathematical concepts, including basic algebra and geometry, to HVAC layouts, measurements, and installations.
• Follow safety procedures and industry best practices while working independently and as part of a team.
• Perform assigned tasks with increasing responsibility as skills and experience develop.

Position Requirements

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Technical, vocational, mechanical, or electrical training preferred.

Experience

• 1–2 years of experience or exposure to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, construction, maintenance, or related trades preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly range for this role is $17.77–$21.33. Compensation may be adjusted based on relevant experience, education, and internal equity. Employees also receive competitive pay, exceptional health benefits, retirement plans, paid time off, and a range of recognition and wellness programs.
