Proviso Township High Schools District 209 is seeking an HVAC and Building Systems Technician to install, operate, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems across district facilities.

The role requires 3–5 years of commercial/industrial HVAC experience, strong BAS and electrical troubleshooting skills, and a safety-focused mindset. This is a full-time, on-site position with potential overtime and union affiliation with SEIU Local 73/CTW.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical or trade school certification in HVAC preferred.
  • 3–5 years of experience in commercial or industrial HVAC maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of BAS systems, mechanical drawings, and HVAC schematics.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or on rooftops.

  • Check refrigerant levels, perform leak tests, and recharge systems per EPA regulations.
  • Maintain cooling towers, condensate water tanks, and water chemistry.
  • Enter work orders and respond to service calls in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate service records and safety compliance.

Reports to: Custodial and Maintenance Building Lead; Director of Buildings and Grounds

Position Summary

The HVAC Technician is responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. This role ensures all building systems operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Inspect, diagnose, and repair HVAC equipment, including air handlers, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, pumps, compressors, VAV boxes, and exhaust fans.

Operate and monitor Building Automation Systems (BAS) for temperature, humidity, and system performance control.

Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC systems to ensure reliable, energy-efficient operation.

Maintain and service gas-fired equipment, steam traps, condensate tanks, and water treatment systems.

Troubleshoot and repair electrical and mechanical components such as motors, contactors, relays, sensors, and thermostats.

Check refrigerant levels, perform leak tests, and recharge systems in compliance with EPA regulations.

Maintain cooling towers, condensate water tanks, and ensure proper water chemistry and treatment.

Support operation and maintenance of swimming pool HVAC and filtration systems.

Enter work orders via district system for building repairs and closeout when complete

Respond to service calls, alarms, and occupant comfort issues in a timely and professional manner.

Maintain accurate service records, logs, and reports.

Ensure compliance with safety regulations, including lockout/tagout, confined space, and fall protection procedures.

Collaborate with other maintenance staff, contractors, and vendors to complete repairs and projects.

Snow removal

Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administration.*

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school certification in HVAC preferred.

Minimum 3–5 years of experience in commercial or industrial HVAC maintenance.

Strong knowledge of BAS systems, mechanical drawings, and HVAC schematics.

Ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Physical ability to lift 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or on rooftops.

Preferred Qualifications

State or city HVAC license.

Experience with large commercial systems (chillers, boilers, cooling towers).

Familiarity with energy management systems and controls.

Pool operator certification (CPO) or equivalent (for facilities with pools).

Indoor and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

Exposure to noise, vibration, chemicals, and mechanical hazards.

May require overtime, on-call, or weekend shifts as needed.
