Summary

This position is responsible for coordinating efforts between HARP’s Humane Investigation program and the Admissions Department by completing a variety of administrative and hands-on duties.

  • Answer Humane Investigations telephone line, retrieve messages, and return calls reporting animal abuse.
  • Review admission of animals brought into the facility by City of Pittsburgh Animal Control.
  • Enter information into HARP’s shelter software database on seized animals and animals brought in by animal control.
  • Work closely with Humane Investigations Manager and Officer in coordinating investigations and assembling evidence for court cases.
  • Create dispatch information in shelter software and maintain dispatch spreadsheet, and call log.
  • Work with the Admission Department to identify lost animals and return them to their owners.
  • Monitor animals on ID Trace, assist with sending certified letters to owners, research owners’ whereabouts and attempt to find current address.
  • Gather information from Animal Control, Police Departments, and/or other law enforcement agencies if/when necessary
  • Maintain positive relationships with co-workers, managers, directors, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge and basic understanding of animal breeds and temperaments preferred.
  • Knowledge of dispatch procedures and experience with prioritizing calls based on severity
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise discretion.
  • Basic knowledge of animal shelter software programs.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to hazards associated with aggressive animals. The employee will primarily be working in a shelter environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Demands

Incumbent may be exposed to hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches, and animal wastes; and possible exposure to contagious diseases. Individual will be required to lift, push, pull, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to read, see, hear, and speak. Incumbent will be required to use a computer with keyboard, telephone, or handheld mobile device for extended periods of time, and office machinery as needed. Travel

This position will require working out of HARP’s North Shore and/or East End locations.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required; Degree in animal or social work/psychology area preferred.
  • Prior experience working in an animal shelter is a plus.
  • Prior work in a nonprofit environment is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license.
