Job description

Our client is a growing, multi-location automotive and transportation services company with several affiliated businesses across Southeast Michigan. The teams include drivers, technicians, dispatchers, service advisors, and administrative staff. We're looking for an organized, people-focused HR professional to help build consistent HR processes across all of our sites.

About the Role

The Human Resources Coordinator supports the full employee lifecycle, including recruiting, onboarding, timekeeping oversight, benefits administration, personnel records, training tracking, and HR compliance. This role works closely with site managers and serves as the main link between HR and our payroll administrator. This position does not process payroll.

What You'll Do
Recruiting and Hiring
  • Post open positions, screen applicants, schedule interviews, check references, and prepare offer letters for approval.
  • Coordinate pre-employment background and driving-record checks with the required notices and authorizations.
  • Track open positions and the hiring pipeline, and help managers fill driver and skilled-trade roles.
Onboarding and Employee Records
  • Run new-hire orientation and the I-9 process, collect handbook acknowledgments, and complete new-hire paperwork on time.
  • Maintain confidential personnel files, keeping medical and sensitive records separate and access-restricted.
  • Schedule and track 30/60/90-day reviews.
  • Coordinate offboarding: exit paperwork, return of company property, removal of system access, and benefits notices.
Payroll Coordination (No Payroll Processing)
  • Send accurate new-hire, separation, leave, and benefits information to the payroll administrator by established deadlines.
  • Collect supervisor-approved time corrections and attendance records and forward them securely to payroll.
  • Review employee pay concerns, check the HR-side information, and refer payroll questions to the payroll administrator.
Timekeeping, Attendance, and Leave
  • Administer the time-clock and missed-punch process, and train employees on timekeeping procedures.
  • Track attendance and leave records, including Michigan earned sick time, and flag exceptions to managers.
  • Handle leave and accommodation requests confidentially and elevate them as needed.
Benefits Administration
  • Track benefits eligibility, process enrollments and changes, and answer employee benefits questions.
  • Coordinate annual open enrollment with brokers and vendors.
  • Maintain the benefits calendar and enrollment records, and help resolve billing discrepancies with accounting.
Employee Relations and Training
  • Receive employee concerns confidentially, document them, and elevate them to leadership as appropriate.
  • Help managers with documentation, performance reviews, and attendance follow-up.
  • Maintain training records, driver license and MVR tracking, and technician certifications.
Reporting
  • Prepare a monthly HR report covering staffing, vacancies, turnover, attendance, benefits enrollment, and training.
  • Help create and maintain standard HR forms, checklists, and templates across locations.

  • ~5 years of experience in HR, people operations, or HR administration
  • Hands-on experience with onboarding, I-9s, personnel records, and benefits enrollment
  • Basic knowledge of Michigan and federal employment rules, including wage-hour, leave, and recordkeeping, plus good judgment about when to ask for expert guidance
  • Strong organization, discretion, and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel between company sites
Preferred
  • Experience supporting multiple locations or business entities
  • Familiarity with ADP or a similar HRIS or timekeeping platform
  • Background in automotive, transportation, towing, or skilled-trades environments
  • SHRM-CP, aPHR, or PHR certification, or progress toward one
