Job description

Banyan is a woman-owned, mission-driven agency with 31 years of experience creating communications solutions for nonprofits, foundations, community organizations, and government agencies. Banyan’s work is driven by our belief that creative communication can illuminate thinking, inspire action, motivate positive behavior, and enable individuals and communities to create positive, lasting change in the world.

We are looking for a People Operations Specialist to own the day-to-day People function - from HRIS administration and compliance to employee experience and office operations. This is a hands‑on, generalist role for someone who enjoys building efficient processes as much as being a trusted advisor for employees and leaders alike. We’re looking for someone who can help Banyan scale thoughtfully while staying compliant and employee centered.

Please note: Banyan does not use AI to screen resumes. All applications are reviewed by a genuinely amazing human.

Employee Lifecycle and Systems
  • Own the end-to-end employee lifecycle, from onboarding tofinal day.
  • Run full-cycle recruiting for open roles, from intake and sourcing through interview coordination, offer, and acceptance. Support hiring managers in building job descriptions, structured interview plans, and consistent, compliant candidate evaluation.
  • Maintain our HRIS (Rippling) and other People Operations systems, keeping employee data accurate, confidential, and secure.
  • Continuously improve People Operations processes so they scale as the company grows.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to employees, supervisors, and leadership on People Operations policies, benefits, and related questions.
Compliance
  • Stay ahead of federal, state, and multi-state compliance requirements, using the HRIS and other tools to flag risks and recommend solutions that keep Banyan aligned with applicable employment laws.
  • Coordinate with outside partners (e.g., employment tax specialists, counsel) to meet federal and state reporting requirements.
  • Track changes in employment law and recommend where policy needs to evolve.
Benefits and Payroll
  • Ensure pay is accurate and employee questions are resolved promptly.
  • Evaluate our benefits offerings and recommend improvements over time.
  • Lead internal communications for annual benefits enrollment.
Culture and Office Experience
  • Lead organization-wide initiatives such as internship programs, employee events, and recognition programs.
  • Manage the office and shape a strong in‑person experience for local staff, from day‑to‑day logistics and recommending improvements, to vendor coordination and troubleshootingstaff issues. Requires regular in‑office presence (2-3 days per week).
Qualifications:
  • 3–5 years of experience in HR/People Operations.
  • Hands‑on experience with an HRIS platform (Rippling experience a strong plus).
  • Solid working knowledge of federal and state employment law, compliance, and reporting requirements.
  • Experience supporting benefits administration and payroll coordination.
  • Excellent judgment and discretion when handling confidential employee information.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable acting as a trusted advisor to employees at all levels.

You’ll stand out if you have experience in government contracting (GovCon) environments.

Compensation:

Salaries for this open position start from $90,000 commensurate with level and experience.

Our benefits are built around a simple idea: meet people where they actually are, not where a standard policy assumes everyone is. A few examples of what that looks like:
  • Flexible Time Off that covers real life, not just vacation. FTO is uncapped and non‑accrual, and it explicitly includes mental health and wellness days, caregiving, doctor's appointments, menstrual needs, and more. If you need the day, you don't have to make it fit a category.
  • Mental health support from day one. Every employee has access to Spring Health, including six free therapy sessions and a personal care navigator, whether or not you've enrolled in our other benefits.
  • Support built for the hardest moments. Beyond FTO, our Compassion Leave policy provides paid time for situations like pregnancy loss, family emergencies, or the loss of an immediate family member.
  • Twelve weeks, fully paid, for new parents. Benefits continue throughout your leave.
  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance, eligibility begins on your first day of employment.
  • Employee Assistance Program (Guardian): counseling, coaching, and legal and financial resources.
The Rest of the Package
  • 11 paid holidays, plus Focus Fridays for uninterrupted work.
  • Free breakfast and snacks in the office.
  • Professional development support, including LinkedIn Learning access, and an unpaid sabbatical option after five years of service.
  • A culture that includes happy hours, team lunches, holiday parties, and, most of all, flexibility and trust.
