Job summary

Houston Food Bank is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to maintain HR processes, support employee relations, and uphold compliance across the organization. You will assist with recruiting, onboarding, training, performance management, and HR data reporting in a fast-paced environment.

The role requires a Bachelor's in HR or related field, 3–5 years HR experience (including Employee Relations), knowledge of Title VII/ADA/ADEA and HRIS systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, or closely related field.
  • 3–5 years of progressive HR experience in multiple HR areas, with at least two years in Employee Relations in a Warehouse/Logistics environment.
  • Working knowledge of Title VII, ADA, ADEA, compliance with regulatory agencies, and company programs.
  • Working knowledge and experience with HRIS systems.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements (EEO, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, DOL, Workers' Comp, TWC).
  • Represent the department in unemployment processes, including attending TWC hearings.
  • Provide guidance to management on complex HR issues; administer routine tasks in delicate circumstances (e.g., investigations, terminations).
  • Disseminate and uphold HR policies; train staff and orient to expectations.
  • Facilitate learning and development programs for internal staff.
  • Glean and report HR metrics to support data-driven decisions.
  • Maintain DOT records and conduct DOT drug testing as required.
  • Conduct orientation sessions for new hires and leaders; manage offboarding.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Human Resources Generalist, under the general direction and guidance of the Human Resources Manager, maintains and develops effective internal procedures, handles employee relations issues, supports recruiting and retention efforts, and keeps performance at peak levels through effective performance management systems.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Ensures compliance with all policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, including, but not limited to, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Department of Labor (DOL), Workers' Compensation, and Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).
  • Represents the department in the unemployment process, including attending TWC Unemployment Hearings on behalf of the organization.
  • Provides support and guidance to management and other staff when complex, specialized, and sensitive questions and issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in delicate circumstances, such as reasonable suspicion testing and investigating allegations of wrongdoing and terminations.
  • Disseminates, effectively communicates, and upholds Human Resources policies, procedures, and practices, and ensures staff is properly trained and oriented to expectations.
  • Facilitates learning and development programs and initiatives that provide internal development opportunities for employees.
  • Gathers, maintains, analyzes, and reports HR metrics to identify trends, patterns, and insights and to support data‑driven decision‑making.
  • Monitors, reviews, verifies, and completes Department of Transportation (DOT) employment verification.
  • Administers DOT random drug testing programs and updates DOT driver credentials and qualification records, including Commercial Driver’s License, medical examiner certificates, and other required documentation, to maintain compliance with laws and regulations in the DOT Platform.
  • Conducts New Employee Orientation sessions and New Leader Orientation.
  • Conducts employee offboarding tasks, including exit interviews.
  • Updates employee information in various systems, including the learning management system (LMS), Human Resources Information System (HRIS), and Employee Engagement Survey Platform.
  • Processes HR-owned employee reimbursements accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates 90 Day employee check‑in meeting with CEO, documents feedback, and provides leadership with relevant feedback.
  • Supports recruiting efforts by participating in interviews and hiring events.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Creates and updates standard operating procedures (SOPs), as needed.
  • Plays a role in the execution of the Business Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) during disasters.
  • Reliable, consistent, on‑site attendance is a requirement. This position requires dependable attendance to meet the needs of the business, including attending and participating in meetings and presentations.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May lead or manage one or more indirect reports by providing guidance and/or oversight to employees and/or contractors. Develops and maintains roles, responsibilities, and expectations. Practices performance management in support of employee development, and perform administrative duties associated with being a people manager. Responsibilities include interviewing, planning, directing work, and resolving problems. Responsibilities also include sponsoring and participating in and/or supporting project teams sponsored by other management team members.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four‑year college or university in Human Resources, Organizational Development, or a closely related field.
  • 3–5 years of progressive Human Resources experience in multiple Human Resource areas, with a minimum of two years in Employee Relations in a Warehouse, Manufacturing, Logistics, or similar environments.
  • Has a working knowledge of Title VII, ADA, ADEA, compliance with regulatory agencies, and company programs.
  • Has a working knowledge and experience with human resources information systems.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish strongly preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS
  • SHRM‑CP or PHR preferred.
  • Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and insurance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required daily to analyze and interpret data, communicate, and remain in a standing or stationary position for a significant amount of the workday; and often access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The employee will need to have the average ability to hear horns, warnings, and alerts associated with a warehouse. The employee must occasionally travel to other sites for business.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While the job is generally performed in an enclosed office environment, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, strong food‑related smells, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the office environment is typically quiet, but the employee will be occasionally exposed to loud noise levels (e.g., horns, fans).

TRAVEL REQUIRED

Travel is required for this position (up to 10% of the time and on a domestic basis within our 18‑county service area as well as sometimes out of our service area for conferences and training). This role supports hours of operations at the Houston Food Bank facilities, as necessary, and may require flexibility (e.g., times of disaster, community events, company events).

SALARY DESCRIPTION

Starting Pay: $60,000 - $75,000
