Summary/Objective

The Human Performance Lab (HPL) at Elizabethtown College in partnership with Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster, LTD (OAL) serves as a dynamic space for testing, evaluation, and performance open to the public. Located on the second floor of Elizabethtown College's Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness and Well-Being, the HPL is fully equipped to evaluate every aspect of a client's health and wellbeing. We achieve this through personalized attention, comprehensive analysis, and a customized pathway to personal improvement.

Summary/Objective

The Human Performance Lab (HPL) at Elizabethtown College in partnership with Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster, LTD (OAL) serves as a dynamic space for testing, evaluation, and performance open to the public. Located on the second floor of Elizabethtown College's Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness and Well-Being, the HPL is fully equipped to evaluate every aspect of a client's health and wellbeing. We achieve this through personalized attention, comprehensive analysis, and a customized pathway to personal improvement.

The purpose of the Lab is to deliver sport, health, and exercise science services to the College campus community as well as our surrounding communities, with the aim of enhancing individuals overall wellness. The HPL aligns with the mission of Elizabethtown College to use our knowledge, talents, and energy to positively make a difference in the lives of others. The primary purpose of this position is to provide technological support for clients interested in obtaining scientific guidance to their exercise needs utilizing our industry leading assessment equipment. The person in this position will assess clients of varying needs to assess the way to achieve maximum outcomes from their physical performance. Clients will include people of all ages, from college sports teams and students to kids and active adults. Assessments are available for those returning from significant injury to those working to maximize the outcomes of their sports performance.

Responsibilities

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions:

  • Responsible for real-time biological, physiological, performance and safety monitoring during assessment, and maintain accurate capture of all data points associated with the testing.
  • Executes biometric and physiological technology monitoring and maintains excellence in all data and information captured.
  • Prepares, sets-up, operates and disinfects/cleans physiological monitoring equipment/materials.
  • Meticulously documents assessment events and may be required to build daily, weekly, and monthly reports.
  • Works with clients on technology bio-harness wear and physiological technology assessment.
  • Utilizes tools and assessments to share physiological data and provide results and recommendations for training plans to the Physical Therapist for review and approval prior to delivery to the client.
  • Provides training/recovery adaptation recommendations.
  • May be required to present daily, weekly, and monthly reports based on already established formats.
  • Comprehends the impacts of physiological load, mechanical load, caloric burn and training intensity associated with medium to high demand conditions.
  • Profound understanding of vital sign physiology measured through electrocardiography, with emphasis on heart rate, breathing rate, respirations, and core temperature, sleep sensor technology and sleep hygiene protocols as they relate to physical training, electromyography, safety, and human performance activities.
  • Work with implemented systems to schedule all client requests.
  • Support the Exercise Science classes in collaboration with the Exercise Science faculty lead the lab work as called upon.
  • Support the marketing efforts of the Lab, as the voice of the subject matter expert.
  • Work with the Strength and Conditioning Head Coach and Athletic Trainers to implement training regimen for clients as agreed to by Physical Therapist.
  • Effectively promote an inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment for all student athletes and non-student athletes; establish a culture of diversity and inclusion in all team activities.
  • Adhere to all OAL policies including, but not limited to, specific duties as a Responsible Employee.
  • Other duties as assigned by OAL.
  • Supervision of Human Performance Lab staff, as the clientele and educational needs grow.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Conduct all responsibilities in a safe manner according to regulations (OSHA, EPA, etc.).

Required Education And Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or Human Performance required.
  • 4-6 years of consistent working experience with 2-4 years of experience in the human performance area of expertise to include but not limited to: psychology, exercise physiology, nutrition, sport science or physical therapy), is required.
  • General knowledge of different athletic teams and the needs of specific positions and the willingness to learn about those with which knowledge/experience is limited is required.
  • This position requires:
    • A current valid drivers license for business travel purposes
    • Current CPR, AED and First Aid certification
    • A current CSCS or SCCC certification
Preferred Education And Experience

The ideal candidate will possess all of the required qualifications noted above in addition to some or all of the following below:

  • BS/MS in Exercise Physiology is preferred.

  • Excellent oral communication skills (i.e. ability to deal effectively with others, speak professionally on the phone, etc.).
  • Superior analytical skills.
  • Strong desire to pursue excellence in all facets of duties.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

Physical Demands

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  • Regularly required to maintain balance while walking, standing, or crouching.
  • Occasionally required to reach up and out with hands and arms.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear; verbally express information or instructions.
  • Regularly required to use hands to grasp objects, type, pick up objects, move objects, or hold objects.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
  • Regularly required to climb stairs and/or ladders.
  • Occasionally required to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Occasionally required to push and/or pull up to 50 pounds a distance of 25 feet.
  • Occasionally required to stand for long periods of time.

  • To successfully perform this position, individuals must possess the following:
    • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)
    • Depth perception and the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships
