Job summary

HOLT Truck Centers is seeking an entry-level Level 1 Technician for our Austin South location. The role focuses on routine maintenance, basic inspections, engine troubleshooting, and performing repairs under supervision.

You will document service reports and assist with parts requisitions while upholding HOLT's safety standards. Ideal candidates have a HS diploma or technical training and up to 1 year of experience, with strong problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Job description

The Level 1 Technician or Preventative Maintenance (PM) technician is an entry level role responsible for performing routine maintenance and basic inspections on heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

Entry-level position - Generally has one year of experience or less and/or demonstrated job relevant knowledge/skills. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job; works under immediate supervision.

The incumbent in this position is expected to model the following practices on a daily basis: 1) Demonstrate alignment with the company's mission and core business values; 2) Collaborate with key internal/external resources; 3) Participate in ongoing self-development.

Essential Functions
  • Models, promotes, reinforces, and rewards the consistent use of HOLT's Values Based Leadership (VBL) tools, models, and processes to ensure alignment with our Vision, Values, and Mission
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses basic engine malfunctions and failures with supervision
  • Performs basic engine and related equipment repairs on trucks and trailers with supervision
  • Provides quality control/assurance inspections of completed tasks to include road testing
  • Uses computers and related software to assist in diagnosing and reprograming engines
  • Completes documentation for service reports, timecards, parts requisition and returns
  • Interprets and utilizes information from operating, maintenance, online resources, and service manuals/bulletins
  • Operates equipment and vehicles with possession of all necessary licenses and certificates
  • Adheres to contamination control and HAZMAT rules and regulations
  • Maintains all company equipment, tools, and vehicle in a good, clean, and working order
  • Communicates job progress to supervisor and customer as needed
  • Supports business operations by working additional hours as needed to meet workload demands and customer requirements
  • Projects professionalism with both internal and external customers, including personal appearance
  • Completes all assigned Technician Training Path courses and safety training
  • Consistently maintains an average rework of less than 2%
  • Ensures a positive average variance consistently
  • Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards
  • Requires regular and punctual employee attendance
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to complete all Level 1 curriculum pathway requirements as outlined in the Leveling Description Guide
  • General knowledge of equipment and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Knowledge and proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and electronic systems diagnostic tooling

  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
  • Ability to complete applicable HDSI VBL Classes, model HOLT's VBL Culture, and successfully apply the tools (Learn)
Requirements
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent, accreditation from a technical school or an applicable skilled trades program required
  • Up to one year of experience preferred
  • Safety Training and task training required
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • None
Travel
  • Up to 5% travel or overnight stays
  • Up to 5% travel to other stores that require help during times of heavy workloads may be expected
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
Additional Requirements
  • Must own and maintain the necessary tools to efficiently perform the job
  • Completion of the HOLT Truck - Tech Level 1 International Alignment Training Module*
  • Minimum 10 billed hours per week (25% proficiency)
Physical Requirements
  • Significant amount of time spent standing
  • Constant movement and use of hands, this position requires good manual dexterity
  • Communication with customers and constant communication with co-workers
  • Routinely reacts to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions, and is required to visually inspect work
  • Must be able to move objects, and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue
  • Be able to maneuver safely and work underneath equipment
  • Lifts and moves materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional kneeling, crouching, stooping, crawling, reaching, and balancing
  • Ascends/descends with gradual or continuous progress by oneself, using both hands and feet and climbs up and down ladders and/or equipment
Work Environment
  • Regularly works indoors around moving mechanical parts
  • May be exposed to weather extremes when working outside in conditions that include inclement weather, heat, cold, and humidity
  • Frequently works in an enclosed vehicle or equipment
  • Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment
  • Exposure to high noise levels
  • Works in extremely bright or inadequate lighting
  • Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, dust, steam, high-pressure water, and high speed rotating equipment
  • Exposure to minor burns, cuts, bites, or stings
