Job summary

Worley seeks an experienced HSE Technician to support COPA One Field Services on the North Slope of Alaska. This remote/rotational role requires robust field safety oversight, regulatory compliance, and incident-prevention leadership across work groups and client reps.

You will deliver HSE training, conduct site audits, manage hazard controls, and assist with drug and alcohol program administration. Meals, lodging, and site transport are provided.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in occupational safety and health or OSH field.
  • CHST/OHST certification or ability to obtain within six months.
  • High School diploma or equivalent; valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

Job description

This is a remote/rotational position, working two weeks/two weeks off or three weeks on/three weeks off, on the North Slope of Alaska. The typical schedule is 84 hours per week (40 hours straight time and a minimum of 44 hours of overtime).

All meals and lodging are provided by Worley while on location. Transportation between Anchorage and the North Slope is also provided.

Job Purpose

The HSE Technician supports the COPA One Field Services (OFS) contract. The advisor will be responsible for all facets of health, safety, and environmental protection for the work groups that it supports. The individual will ensure day-to-day compliance with all regulatory requirements, client requirements, corporate procedures, internal procedures, and applicable policies. The HSE Technician is committed to the one-way system of preventing harm to people, assets, and the environment.

This position also supports occupational health initiatives, including administration of the Company's Drug and Alcohol Program requirements.

All other tasks that are performed by an HSE Technician will be performed in support of this work scope.

Essential Job Functions
  • Foster a strong partnership between the HSE team, operational groups, and client representatives.
  • Champion field implementation of the company's incident prevention program.
  • Effectively communicate between multiple work groups, organizational layers, and client representatives.
  • Maintain a daily field presence by attending morning toolbox talks, weekly safety meetings, and general site visits.
  • Identify areas for HSE improvement/mitigation of hazardous conditions and assist with the development of S.M.A.R.T action items.
  • Effectively manage and prioritize responsibilities to ensure the timely completion of HSE tasks.
  • Prepare and deliver instructor-led HSE training to groups of varying sizes.
  • Conduct regular site safety audits and worksite inspections.
  • Review hazard/risk assessments and correct gaps through positive coaching.
  • Assist company industrial hygienist with exposure monitoring and inspections.
  • Proactively develop knowledge of company operations and practices.
  • Respond to incidents (should they occur) and facilitate the investigation process through collaboration with company operations and client representatives.
  • Write professional summary reports for incidents, audit findings, and recommend improvement opportunities.
  • Occupational injury and illness case management.
  • Administer drug and alcohol specimen collections in accordance with the Company's Drug and Alcohol Program, including chain-of-custody procedures, documentation requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain all qualifications and certifications required to perform drug and alcohol specimen collections.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Safely climb ladders of various heights.
  • Routinely operate Worley/client light and/or medium duty vehicles.

  • Possess a clear understanding of industrial hygiene practices and procedures to include use of sound level meters, noise dosimeters and air sampling equipment.
  • Familiarity and understanding of applicable environmental agencies and regulatory requirements (EPA, ADEC, RCRA, Clean Water Act, and the Clean Air Act, etc.).
  • Ability to manage competing demands; accept, and act upon, criticism and constructive feedback; be adaptable and flexible.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and execute tasks within specified time periods.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, to include office, repair shops, hot and extreme cold.
Physical Demands / Work Environment

Work is performed in a remote Arctic environment with limited medical resources. The work site is approximately 840 miles (at least 4 hours by air ambulance) from surgical, specialist, and tertiary medical care. Due to the remoteness of the site, medical evacuation from this location may be significantly delayed by weather conditions. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is required to:

  • Must have ability to stand, walk on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, sit, squat, kneel, crawl, reach through low and high ranges, work overhead, and exhibit normal balance and coordination. These basic physical requirements are essential for safe performance of the job in harsh environments with exposure to very cold temperatures and while wearing arctic gear.
  • Standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Driving for prolonged periods of time in the dark and inclement weather.
  • Ability to climb scaffold, ramps, stairs, equipment, portable ladders, and/or wellhouse/tank/facility fixed ladders of 20 feet or greater.
  • Ability to wear and utilize fall protection within manufacturer specifications.
  • Lift 25 lbs. from floor to waist with two hands.
  • Lift 25 lbs. from floor to shoulder with two hands.
  • Carry 25 lbs. for 15 feet with two hands.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in occupational safety and health and/or a minimum of 1 year of experience working in a dedicated OSH role.
  • Professional certification such CHST/OHST certification OR the ability to obtain one within six months of hire.
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to be insured by Worley.
  • North Slope Experience Preferred.
  • Successfully complete and maintain certification as a qualified drug and alcohol specimen collector in accordance with the Company's Drug and Alcohol Program and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Must be willing and able to administer drug and alcohol specimen collections as part of the position's routine job duties.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in occupational safety & health and/or 10 plus years of experience working in a dedicated OSH role.
  • Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP).
  • Advanced competencies: Fall protection competent person, excavation/trenching competent person, permit required confined space entry, energy isolation, industrial hygiene sampling/monitoring, OSH program management, document control, process safety management, environmental program management, and Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Current certification as a qualified drug and alcohol specimen collector.
  • Previous experience administering workplace drug and alcohol testing programs.
