Under the supervision of the School Principal and the Supervisor of World Languages, the Spanish Teacher is responsible for developing students' proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. The teacher fosters an understanding and appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures, in alignment with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for World Languages (NJSLS-WL) and ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Proficiency Guidelines.

Spanish Teacher – Tenured Position

Position Purpose

Under the supervision of the School Principal and the Supervisor of World Languages, the Spanish Teacher is responsible for developing students' proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. The teacher fosters an understanding and appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures, in alignment with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for World Languages (NJSLS-WL) and ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Proficiency Guidelines.

Essential Functions
  • Designs and implements a standards-based Spanish language curriculum that aligns with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS-WL) and district instructional goals.
  • Creates a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment that supports student-centered learning and differentiated instruction.
  • Develops lesson plans that integrate communication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities, in accordance with ACTFL proficiency-based instruction.
  • Uses research-based instructional strategies to teach Spanish language acquisition, including vocabulary development, grammar, sentence structure, pronunciation, and conversational fluency.
  • Incorporates cultural perspectives, products, and practices from Spanish-speaking countries to provide students with meaningful real-world connections to the language.
  • Uses a variety of formative and summative assessments to measure student progress and proficiency, adapting instruction as needed to meet individual student needs, including those of English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities.
  • Maintains accurate student attendance, assessment, and progress records in compliance with district policies and New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) regulations.
  • Collaborates with colleagues, including ESL, special education, and general education teachers, to support language development across content areas.
  • Engages in professional development opportunities, including NJDOE-approved workshops, to stay current on best practices in Spanish language instruction.
  • Communicates effectively with students, families, and staff to support student learning and cultural appreciation.
  • Ensures compliance with district policies, code of conduct, and New Jersey state laws governing student instruction and behavior.
  • Participates in school and district committees, extracurricular activities, and community outreach initiatives related to Spanish language education.
Additional Duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal, Supervisor of World Languages, or Superintendent.

  • Utilizes district-approved technology, including learning management systems (LMS), interactive whiteboards, language lab software, and multimedia tools to enhance Spanish language instruction.

  • May require travel between district buildings and professional development locations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of New Jersey’s World Language Standards (NJSLS-WL) and ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
  • Proficiency in instructional technology and digital platforms for Spanish language learning.
  • Understanding of NJDOE regulations, including equity in education and culturally responsive teaching.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 Plans, and ELLs.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills for collaborating with staff, students, and parents.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Works in a standard classroom and school environment.
  • May involve extended periods of standing, speaking, and interactive instruction.
Qualifications Profile

Certification/License:

  • New Jersey Standard Certificate, CEAS, or CE as a Teacher of Spanish.
  • Additional bilingual education endorsements are a plus.
  • Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, World Languages, Linguistics, Education, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Master’s degree in language education, linguistics, or related field preferred.

Experience:

  • Prior successful teaching experience in Spanish language instruction preferred.
  • Experience implementing proficiency-based language instruction and assessments is a plus.
FLSA Status:
  • Exempt (Tenured position under NJDOE guidelines).
