Primary Purpose
Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core academic subject area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. Provide instruction and coach students to develop skills and ability to excel in their assigned sport. Contribute to the overall education program and the growth of students involved in athletics.
Education / Certification
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or training for the subject and level assigned.
- Teaching certification in multiple areas is preferred.
- Middle School English Language Arts Teachers must obtain ESL Certification within one year of employment; ESL certification for other MS teachers is preferred.
- Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned.
Special Knowledge / Skills
- Knowledge of the core academic subject assigned.
- General knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
- Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures is preferred.
- Knowledge of UIL rules is preferred. Ability to manage student behavior effectively.
Experience / Other Requirements
- At least one year of student teaching or an approved internship.
- Prior coaching experience is preferred.
- Personal cell phone required for district-related communication, including after hours or off-site activities.
- Class B CDL with P and S endorsements (or ability to obtain within 30 days).
- Attend state-mandated 20-hour TEA certification class and maintain certification through refresher courses every three years.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional Strategies
- Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with district curriculum, with documented evidence of preparation.
- Adapt lessons for different student learning styles.
- Present subject matter following TEA, district, and school policies.
- Plan and utilize appropriate instructional strategies, activities, and materials.
- Assess student learning styles and use results to inform instruction.
- Collaborate with special education staff to modify curricula as needed.
- Coordinate with staff to set instructional goals and methods.
- Manage athletic activities, contests, and practices to promote skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Supervise teacher aides and volunteers.
- Incorporate technology to enhance teaching and learning.
Student Growth and Development
- Assist students in improving study habits and methods.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement.
- Supervise student athletes during competitions and trips.
- Transport student athletes to sporting events.
- Enforce discipline during athletic activities and trips, in accordance with policies.
- Educate students on NCAA regulations regarding scholarships and recruiting.
- Promote sportsmanship and respectful conduct.
Classroom Management and Organization
- Create a conducive learning environment.
- Manage student behavior per policies.
- Ensure safety of students, equipment, and facilities.
- Assist in selecting instructional materials.
Communication
- Maintain open communication with parents, students, and staff.
- Build professional relationships with colleagues and community members.
- Communicate information clearly and effectively.
Professional Growth and Development
- Participate in staff development activities.
- Stay informed of regulations and policies.
- Maintain accurate records and inventories.
- Oversee maintenance of athletic equipment.
- Attend faculty meetings and serve on committees.
- Adhere to district policies on records management.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise teacher aides, assistant coaches, and student athletic assistants.
