Job summary

Portledge School on Long Island seeks a part-time, seasonal Varsity Boys Lacrosse Assistant Coach to support the Head Coach in creating an inclusive, development-focused environment for student-athletes with varying lacrosse abilities. The role reports to the Director of Athletics and emphasizes growth, leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork both on and off the field.

Qualifications

• Coaching experience in boys lacrosse.
• Strong knowledge of lacrosse fundamentals, strategy and player development.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• First Aid, CPR, and AED certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
• Experience with high school athletes preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist Head Coach in planning and leading practices for athletes of varying skill levels.
• Develop individual and team lacrosse skills including stick work, passing, catching, shooting, dodging, positioning, and game strategy.
• Create a safe, inclusive environment that encourages effort, growth, and sportsmanship.
• Reinforce the program's expectations for character, teamwork, accountability, and respect.
• Assist with game preparation, in-game coaching, player evaluation, and post-game development.
• Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, travel, and team activities.
• Support implementation of practice plans that challenge experienced players while developing emerging athletes.
• Communicate effectively with the Head Coach, student-athletes, parents, and the Athletic Department.
• Support Portledge Athletics' mission, philosophy, and values.
• Ensure compliance with school, league, and safety regulations.
• Collaborate with coaches across levels to promote continuity in player development and program culture.
• Serve as a positive mentor and role model for student-athletes' academic, athletic, and personal growth.
