Job summary

Portledge School seeks a student-centered Varsity Boys Lacrosse Assistant Coach to support the Head Coach in creating an inclusive, developmentally appropriate environment for athletes with diverse abilities. This is a part-time, seasonal role reporting to the Director of Athletics.

The successful candidate will foster leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship while assisting with planning, practice, game prep and post-game development for the lacrosse program.

Qualifications

  • Experience coaching or playing boys lacrosse at high school level.
  • Strong knowledge of lacrosse fundamentals, strategy and player development.
  • Ability to teach diverse skill levels and motivate student-athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Head Coach in planning and leading practices for varying skill levels.
  • Help develop individual and team lacrosse skills and game strategy.
  • Create a safe, supportive environment that encourages effort and growth.
  • Reinforce program expectations for teamwork, respect and accountability.
  • Assist with game prep, in-game coaching, and post-game development.
  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, games and travel.
  • Support implementation of practice plans for both experienced and developing players.
  • Communicate effectively with Head Coach, players, parents, and staff.
  • Align with Portledge Athletics mission and safety regulations.
  • Collaborate with other levels to promote program continuity and culture.
  • Serve as a positive mentor and role model for student-athletes.

Job Description:
Position Summary

Portledge School seeks an enthusiastic, student-centeredVarsity Boys Lacrosse Assistant Coach. The successful candidate will support the Head Coach in creating a positive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate environment that fosters the growth of student-athletes with a wide range of lacrosse abilities and competitive experience. This is a part-time, temporary, seasonal position reporting to the Director of Athletics.

This position is ideal for a coach who is passionate about player development, fostering a love of the game, and helping student-athletes build confidence, leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork both on and off the field.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Assist the Head Coach in planning and leading engaging, well-organized practices that support athletes of varying skill levels.
  • Help develop individual and team skills, including stick work, passing, catching, shooting, dodging, defensive positioning, transition play, and game strategy.
  • Create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment that encourages effort, growth, and sportsmanship.
  • Reinforce the program's expectations for character, teamwork, accountability, and respect.
  • Assist with game preparation, in-game coaching, player evaluation, and post-game development.
  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, travel, and team activities.
  • Support the implementation of practice plans that challenge experienced players while continuing to develop emerging athletes.
  • Communicate effectively with the Head Coach, student-athletes, parents, and the Athletic Department.
  • Support the overall mission, philosophy, and values of Portledge Athletics.
  • Ensure compliance with all school, league, and safety regulations.
  • Collaborate with coaches across all levels of the boys lacrosse program to promote continuity in player development and program culture.
  • Serve as a positive mentor and role model, supporting the academic, athletic, and personal growth of student-athletes.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Previous coaching and/or playing experience in boys lacrosse.
  • Strong knowledge of lacrosse fundamentals, strategy, and player development.
  • Ability to teach and motivate student-athletes with diverse skill levels and competitive experience.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and student-centered team culture.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a coaching staff.
  • Experience working with high school-aged student-athletes (preferred).
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (preferred or willingness to obtain).
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model who demonstrates integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to student‑athlete success.
Season:

The season will start approximately around March 1, 2027 and end approximately around May 30, 2027.
