Job Description

TITLE: HS - Assistant Coach - Cross Country

LOCATION: J.C. Harmon High School

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district serving approximately 22,000 students. The district employs about 4,000 staff, including more than 1,800 teachers, and supports students from a diverse linguistic and cultural background.

Job Goal

Responsible for all levels and all phases of Cross Country. The assistant coach will support the head coach in ensuring that the program is well‐organized, compliant with all regulations, and safe for participants.

Essential Functions

• Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
• Supervise student athletes during all aspects of participation, including competition, travel, meetings, and practices, to maintain a safe environment.
• Maintain a variety of records to comply with district, conference, and state requirements, such as pre‑participation exams, injury forms, waivers, schedules, inventory, and roster data.
• Ensure all athletes are cleared to practice and compete, including completion of required physical exams, concussion forms, insurance waivers, and eligibility checks.
• Develop and submit practice schedules, including facility usage and staff assignments, in accordance with school and district policies.
• Supervise practice sessions and secure the locker room.
• Report all injuries to appropriate school officials, following injury reporting policy and board procedures.
• Collaborate with athletic trainers and follow their recommendations regarding student safety.
• Organize uniform and equipment checkout, maintain inventory, and enforce equipment care rules.
• Maintain records of evaluation procedures and assess student athletes to provide feedback and determine team placement.
• Attend league meetings, coaching conferences, parent orientations, recognition events, and banquets to promote the program.
• Develop team and individual training regimes focusing on strength, speed, agility, nutrition, and injury prevention.
• Evaluate facilities for hazards and recommend necessary modifications to reduce injury risk.
• Oversee coaching personnel and student managers, providing direction, feedback, and written evaluations.
• Teach coaching staff, parents, and athletes the importance of sportsmanship and compliance with KSHSAA Rule 52.
• Monitor academic eligibility of student athletes and intervene with counseling or tutoring as needed.
• Report team scores and prepare public information releases as required.
• Perform other duties assigned by the Building Principal or Athletic Director.

Qualifications

• Certified teacher or qualified for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
• Successful completion of a criminal background check.
• Current certification in CPR and AED.
