Job Title: Coach - Assistant
Location: Sumner Academy

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district serving approximately 21,000 students, with over 60 languages spoken at home. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, ranked #6 high school nationally and #1 in Kansas according to US News rankings.

The district includes Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools. It is the fifth-largest district in Kansas with a student population approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. The district employs about 4,000 staff, including over 1,800 teachers.

Job Goal

Responsible to the head coach of a sport. The assistant coach must demonstrate loyalty to the program, the head coach, and fellow assistants, and carry out all assigned duties.

Essential Functions
  • Assist the head coach with organizing and directing coaching staff
  • Collect physical examination and insurance release forms
  • Report injuries to the school nurse
  • Manage equipment inventory and needs
  • Keep accurate records of equipment
  • Provide team rosters and coordinate awards ceremonies
  • Ensure proper conduct during trips and contests
  • Understand sport rules and attend to injuries
  • Maintain equipment and uniforms
  • Organize practice sessions
Qualifications
  • Certified teacher or qualify for Rule 10 approval through Kansas State High School Activities Association

Terms & Salary

Terms vary by sport. Salary based on Kansas City Kansas Supplemental Salary Schedule. Performance evaluated per district policies.
