Job summary

Great Lakes Cheese, Inc. is seeking an HR Supervisor to oversee day-to-day HR operations and directly supervise plant HR Generalists and HR Specialists.

You will ensure consistent execution of HR programs, employee relations, workforce engagement, and compliance across the plant. This role acts as the front-line HR resource for employees and supervisors, with back-up support for the HR Manager in a 24/7 operation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum 3+ years of progressive HR experience.
  • Demonstrated ability or readiness to supervise a team of HR professionals.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiar with HR policies and regulatory compliance (FMLA, ADA, Workers’ Comp).

Responsibilities

  • Supervise HR Generalists/Specialists in delivering HR processes and employee engagement across the plant.
  • Serve as the first-level escalation point for routine employee relations for hourly employees; guide supervisors and employees on coaching and investigations.
  • Partner with operations supervisors to support hourly staffing, attendance, and workplace improvements.
  • Oversee core processes: 30-60-90 day reviews, performance reviews, and internal job postings/selection tracking.
  • Support administration, data collection, and compliance for FMLA, ADA, Workers’ Comp, injury investigations, and LOA requests.
  • Maintain a positive, inclusive shop-floor presence and liaise between employees and leadership to resolve concerns.
  • Reinforce HR policies and ownership culture with employees and supervisors.
  • Coordinate and facilitate employee meetings, recognition programs, and engagement events.
  • Oversee hourly talent acquisition at recruitment events and community hiring initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with HR policies, regulatory requirements, audits, and accurate HR records.
  • Analyze HR metrics and provide recommendations to improve operations.
  • Assist with implementing updated HR practices and training programs as needed.
  • Handle confidential information with strict confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

The HR Supervisor will assist the HR Manager by overseeing the day-to-day HR operations and directly supervising the plant HR Generalists and HR Specialists. This role ensures the consistent execution of HR Programs, employee relations processes, workforce engagement initiatives, and compliance across the plant. The HR Supervisor will serve as the primary front-line HR resource for employees and supervisors, providing guidance and support on routine HR matters. In support of a 24/7 operation, this role will serve as as a back-up to the HR Manager helping ensure continuity of HR services.

Job Responsibilities
  • Supervise HR Generalists/Specialists in delivering HR processes, policies, procedures, and employee engagement across the plant, including coordinating daily task assignments, coverage schedules, and workload distribution.
  • Serve as the first-level escalation point for routine employee relations matters involved hourly employees,, providing guidance and counsel to supervisors and employees on coaching, corrective actions, and workplace investigations; escalating complex, high risk or sensitive matters to the HR Manager.
  • Partner with operations supervisors to support hourly staffing, employee development, attendance, and workplace improvements.
  • Oversee and ensure the execution of core processes, including 30-60-90 day and employee performance, New Hire Appraisal Monitoring (reviews and attendance points), and internal job bid processes (job postings, notifications, selection tracking).
  • Support the administration, tracking, data collection, and compliance for all FMLA, ADA, Workers’ Compensation, injury investigations, light-duty return-to-work, and Leave of Absence (LOA) requests.
  • Foster a positive, supportive, safe, and inclusive working environment by maintaining an active presence on the shop floor, while serving as a liaison between employees and company leadership to resolve workplace concerns.
  • Reinforce company policies, HR practices, and ownership culture with employees and supervisors,
  • Coordinate and facilitate employee meetings, recognition programs, and engagement events.
  • Oversee the hourly talent acquisition processes, representing the company at recruitment events, job fairs, and community hiring initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with established HR policies, procedures and regulatory requirements by supporting audits, monitoring documentation practices and maintaining accurate employee records in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Review and analyze routine HR metrics and reports, including turnover, absenteeism, staffing and performance completion data, while identifying trends to provide recommendations to the HR Manager and Plant Leadership to support operational decisions.
  • Assist with implementing updated HR practices or training programs as organizational needs evolve, acting as a change agent during workplace transitions.
  • Handle confidential employee and organizational information, including compensation data, ensuring confidentiality if maintained and sensitive information is safeguarded appropriately.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution, or commensurate experience.
  • Minimum of 3of progressive HR experience.
  • Demonstrated ability or readiness to supervise a team of HR professionals.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated strong and professional people communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, troubleshoot, and problem solve.
  • Familiar with HR policies and procedures (employment law and compliance - FMLA, Workers Compensation, ADA, Employee Relations, etc.).
  • Ability to both collaborate and make sound, independent decisions based on management expertise and standard practice.
  • Must be legally authorized to work for a company in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or a related field.
  • 4-8 years of HR experience supporting a multi-building or multi-shift 24/7 manufacturing facility.
  • 1 or more years of experience supervising a team.Experience in hourly talent acquisition processes and strategy.
  • Direct knowledge of manufacturing positions, functions, and lean manufacturing methodology.
  • HRIS experience (preferably SAP SuccessFactors).
Working Conditions
  • Occasional exposure to industrial operations including: temperature extremes from approximately 35ºF to 100ºF; noise levels in excess of 85 dB; moisture and moving machinery.
  • Work is performed in an office setting.
