Job summary

Volunteers of America Chesapeake and Carolinas is hiring a Behavioral Support Professional (BSP) for Chesapeake, VA, evening shift. The BSP provides direct clinical services—assessment, interventions, and discharge planning—under the supervision of the DSP in I/DD residential programs.

The role requires an associates degree (preferred), 5 years in an I/DD setting, and 2+ years’ experience with Level 4 SIS autism/behavioral issues. CPR and TOVA training are required.

Qualifications

• Associates degree preferred.
• 5 years’ experience in an I/DD setting.
• 2+ years’ experience with SIS Level 4 for autism or behavioral issues.
• CPR certification and TOVA training completed.

Responsibilities

• Provides behavioral and direct support services in accordance with accepted standards in I/DD services.
• Plans and conducts supports according to Person-Centered Plans.
• Documents according to BSP guidelines and ensures DSP documentation.
• Performs shift documentation and contributes to support plans and meetings.
• Attends team meetings and reports on progress toward goals; updates plans as needed.
• Delivers supports ethically, respecting dignity and autonomy of individuals.
• Assesses and interprets needs; communicates effectively with families/guardians.
• Maintains certifications and trainings current.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

The Behavioral Support Professional (BSP) provides direct clinical services - assessment, interventions, treatment planning and discharge planning through consistent implementation of all plans. The BSP works directly with the DSP to provide supports in the I/DD residential programs.

Essential Functions:

• Provides behavioral and direct support services in accordance with accepted standards and best practices in I/DD services. This is done in a timely fashion as outlined by CARF, Federal and State Regulations, VOACC’s Mission, policies and procedures.
• Plans and conducts supports to people according to their Person-Centered Plan.
• Documents according to BSP guidelines and assures DSP staff also do so while working together.
• Performs documentation for each shift worked. May be asked to contribute to support plans and attend meetings, as appropriate or invited, to help develop goals/objectives with the person. May collect billing and census information.
• Attends team meetings when indicated and report on people and their progress toward goals; updates support plans as needed or as changes in condition occur.
• Deliver supports in an ethical manner which promotes respect for the person and enhances their dignity and satisfaction.
• Demonstrates the ability to assess and interpret a person’s response to supports in age/disability/culturally sensitive specific manner and ensure documentation of this.
• Assess and interprets age/disability/cultural needs; Identifies safety, psychosocial, special mobility and special equipment needs; and Communicates in an age/disability/culturally sensitive related manner to people and their families/guardians.
• Participate on the house team meetings and trainings.
• Keep all certifications and trainings current.
• Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

QualificationsRequirements

Educational / Experience Requirements:

• Associates Degree preferred.
• 5 years’ experience in an I/DD setting
• 2 or more years’ experience working with people with a SIS scale of Level 4 for Autism or Behavioral Issues

Qualifications / Skills:

• Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related disability-related needs of people supported.
• Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the I/DD population served.
• Must be able to assess and interpret data about the person’s status in order to identify each person’s needs and provide the appropriate care, including age related care/disability/cultural sensitivity related care to the I/DD population.
• Must have basic knowledge of chronic mental illness.
• Must have excellent communication and group/process skills as related to each person’s needs.
• Must be able to demonstrate assessment, intervention, treatment and planning skills.
• Must be versatile, flexible, and able to perform in stressful situations.
• Must have good time and organizational skills.
• Must be capable of coordinating multi-faceted workload.
• Must be able to work with an array of mental/physical disabled persons.
• Must successfully complete CPR certification and TOVA training.
