Job summary

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Department of Campus Recreation, seeks a Human Resource Generalist to manage payroll, time reporting and leave, oversee HRIS and appointments, and support learning and development initiatives. Human Resource Generalist

Job Summary: The HR Generalist manages a variety of human resource activities and assists with complex human resource issues, escalating as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities
Payroll, Time Reporting, and Leave Management: (40%)
  • 1. Process payroll and timesheets, including unique payments like summer salary.
  • 2. Address complex timesheet/leave issues and return timesheets/leave requests as needed.
  • 3. Process routine and non-routine pay adjustments.
  • 4. Administer and track FMLA, PFLA, or other managed leave categories.
  • 5. Counsel and resolve issues related to leave. Inform staff of all regulations/policies relating to leave usage and time reporting.
HR Information Systems & Appointments Management: (20%)
  • 1. Responsible for employee appointments, troubleshooting transactions to ensure accurate results and escalating complex issues as needed.
  • 2. Enters routine and non-routine data and pulls reports/
  • 3. Ensures accuracy of input data and reports and/or resolves minor discrepancies.
  • 4. May develop new reports.
  • 5. Participates in appropriate system testing and/or feedback.
Employee Learning and Professional Development: (5%)
  • 1. Leads or supports the delivery of informational or training sessions utilizing prescribed documentation.
  • 2. Informs employee of target opportunities for professional development.
  • 3. Work with supervisors to request promotions and/or plan for promotions and employee career pathing.
Organizational Development: (5%)
  • 1. Supports organizational development initiatives.
  • 2. Provides input development strategies, programs, and retention efforts.
  • 3. Ensures a positive environment and addresses basic concerns as able.
  • 4. May participate in organizational assessments, gather feedback, stay interviewing, etc.
Workplace Diversity and Inclusion: (5%)
  • 1. Participates and supports diversity and inclusion training and programs.
  • 2. Provides guidance on DEI policies, initiatives, and resolution of DEI-related compliance issues.
Recruitment and Talent Acquisition: (5%)
  • 1. Responsible for independently coordinating search, hiring, and onboarding processes for student, hourly, and full-time hiring needs, including recruitment efforts.
  • 2. Communicate and implement search procedures aligned with best practices and compliance needs, advising search committees and hiring managers.
  • 3. Communicate with applicants and new hires, facilitating interview, hiring, and onboarding processes.
  • 4. Develop job postings.
Labor & Employee Relations: (5%)
  • 1. Provides guidance to supervisors on performance management practices and issues.
  • 2. Handles minor supervisor/employee conflicts requiring intervention or consultation with either party.
  • 3. Facilitates accommodation and conflict and resolution efforts.
  • 4. Recommends interpretation of collective bargaining agreement language and corrective actions to performance issues under administrative supervision.
Job Classification & Analysis: (5%)
  • 1. Conducts job classification and analysis processes.
  • 2. Provides guidance on job descriptions, promotions, and titles.
  • 3. Identity out-of-scope duties and recommend title changes based on overall responsibilities, as appropriate.
HR Compliance & Policy: (5%)
  • 1. Ensure adherence to HR policies and legal requirements through tracking, training, and internal reviews.
  • 2. Identify areas of concern related to adherence to HR policies and legal requirements.
Compensation and Benefits: (5%)
  • 1. Advises on salary decisions and develops justification with general oversight.
  • 2. Recommends compensation amounts for temporary/additional pay circumstances, escalating unique circumstances for additional input.
  • 3. Informs employees of all available benefit offerings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Administration, Management, Organizational Administration, Public Administration, Labor Relations, Business Administration, or a field closely related to the position.
  • Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience performing professional-level human resources duties.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service Human Resource Generalist position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the posting closes,. Salary is $60,000 - $65,000 and is commensurate with experience.
