Job Description

Our North American employees work largely remotely, across multiple US states and in Canada.

This role is mainly remote, though we are looking for someone who is based on the East Coast. We would welcome a willingness to travel occasionally to visit our offices when needed, for example for celebration events, gatherings and quarterly meetings.

This role is the day to day HR contact for our US colleagues, with some support for colleagues in Canada. It combines practical HR advice with the administration that keeps us accurate and compliant, in roughly equal measure, covering onboarding, leave, benefits administration, employee relations and compliance reporting.

What you'll be doing

  • Act as the main day to day contact for our US colleagues on all people matters, and support colleagues in Canada where needed.

  • Advise managers and employees on everyday people issues, including performance, conduct, absence and leave, in line with federal, state and local law.

  • Handle routine employee relations cases, and elevate complex or higher risk matters to our Employee Relations team.

  • Make sure we follow federal, state and local employment law in each state where we employ people, and keep our US policies and handbook up to date as the law changes.

  • Manage onboarding and offboarding administration, including Form I-9 verification and state new hire reporting.

  • Administer leave, including FMLA and state leave programs, keeping accurate records and working with payroll on any pay impact.

  • Handle day to day benefits administration, including enrollments, life event changes and employee questions, working with our benefits provider.

  • Own our US compliance reporting, including W-2s, 1099s and EEO-1 reporting, working with finance and payroll.

  • Keep HR records and our HR system accurate and up to date.

  • Support the pay review and promotions process for our US colleagues.

  • Support change projects in the US, working with the Regional HR Manager, North America and our Employee Relations team.

  • Track and report on key people numbers for the US, and explain clearly what they tell us.

This list is not exhaustive, and the role may include other reasonable duties.

Qualifications

  • Recent, relevant HR generalist experience in the US, supporting employees across multiple states, in an organization of at least 200 employees.

  • Strong working knowledge of federal and state employment law, including FLSA and wage and hour rules, FMLA and state leave laws, EEOC requirements and the ADA.

  • Experience advising managers and employees on everyday people issues, and good judgment on when to elevate.

  • Experience handling routine employee relations matters fairly and consistently, in line with HR policies and the law.

  • Solid administration skills, with strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping.

  • Experience of US statutory reporting, including W-2s, 1099s and EEO-1 reporting.

  • Working knowledge of US benefits administration, including enrollments, life events and COBRA.

  • Experience of onboarding compliance, including Form I-9.

  • Comfortable with HR systems and spreadsheets, and able to explain clearly what the data tells us.

  • Well organized, and able to manage a high volume of work and competing priorities.

  • Clear spoken and written communication, and the ability to work well with people at every level of the organization.

  • Handles confidential and sensitive matters with discretion and integrity.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, growing technology business, and able to adapt as priorities change.

  • A SHRM or HRCI certification (such as SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR) is preferred but not required.

  • Some knowledge of Canadian employment practices would be helpful.

  • Experience of mergers and acquisitions would be helpful.
