Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM is seeking an HPC Engineer to modernize AI-assisted workflows for the Environments Group. You will build OpenShift-based tools, surface workload visibility, and collaborate with Workload Management and Consulting teams to improve documentation and support workflows.

The role spans two levels (Engineer 2 or Engineer 3) with responsibilities ranging from automation and deployment to technical ownership, mentoring, and complex integration of AI

Qualifications

• Experience with UNIX/Linux system administration and command-line tools.
• Experience applying AI/ML tools to practical problems—docs, summarization, retrieval-augmented systems.
• Experience with containers (Docker, Podman, Charliecloud, Singularity) and container orchestration (OpenShift, Rancher).
• Scripting ability (Python, Bash) for automation and tool development.
• Ability to communicate across both infrastructure and end-user contexts.

Responsibilities

• Identify AI-assisted automation candidates and build automation for docs and troubleshooting guides.
• Enable AI workloads on LANL HPC systems using Slinky and RunAI; deploy on OpenShift.
• Develop and deploy tools on OpenShift for users and internal teams; provide workload visibility.
• Provide technical support and documentation; collaborate with vendors and open-source communities.
• Mentor and contribute to knowledge base; collaborate with Workload Management and Consulting teams.
