Responsibilities

A mail carrier sorts and delivers mail for the United States Postal Service (USPS). He or she is a government employee who directly serves the public.

Sort and bundle mail at the post office before departure.

Deliver mail by vehicle and on foot, covering designated routes.

Work a scheduled route starting at 7 a.m., delivering mail throughout the day. May be required to work overtime and drive on weekends with a weekday off.

Perform daily physical tasks, including walking several miles in varying weather, and occasionally transport heavy packages.

Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent resident alien status.
  • Must successfully pass the USPS Exam 473m, a standardized test of memory and reading ability.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Must hold a current valid driver’s license.

  • Must be physically fit to work in all types of weather and walk many miles per day.
Employment Terms

Start in a part‑time flexible (PTF) capacity, typically for a few weeks to several years until a full‑time position becomes available.

Part‑time carriers may work varied hours with no guaranteed days off, whereas full‑time carriers receive a 40‑hour week and two days off per week.
