A nonprofit organization in New York City is currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate professional to join one of their growing family shelters in Brooklyn as a Housing Specialist.

About the Opportunity:

  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday
  • Hours: 8am to 4pm or 9am to 5pm
  • Setting: Family Shelter

Responsibilities:

  • Act as a liaison to external organizations for education, healthcare, housing, and social services
  • Support clients in achieving housing goals through referrals and community resources
  • Conduct housing searches, including contacting landlords and exploring listings
  • Develop and facilitate housing-related workshops and materials
  • Provide individualized counseling and organize presentations from housing experts
  • Build connections with community organizations and landlords
  • Evaluate housing packages and ensure readiness for move-ins, including payments and conditions
  • Escort clients to housing-related appointments.
  • Conduct intake, needs assessments, and re-evaluations for clients
  • Maintain and update client files, ensuring documentation compliance
  • Monitor client progress through regular meetings and update relevant databases
  • Document all client interactions and generate required reports
  • Assist clients with applications for benefits and entitlements
  • Coordinate with referral organizations to track progress

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 2 years of experience
  • First Aid / CPR certification

Desired Skills:

  • Bilingual
  • Certification in Overdose Prevention
  • Previous experience in a Shelter setting
