Job Description

JOB TITLE: Housing Specialist

FLSA: Non-Exempt

DIVISION: Services

REPORTS TO: Shelter Director

LOCATION: College Point (Queens)

SALARY: $45,000.00 - $50,000.00

SUMMARY: This position will work out of a 200+ bed men’s homeless shelter located in College Point, NY. The Housing Specialist is responsible for working with clients to identify permanent housing. Proof of COVID-19 vaccinations required.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Interface with landlords and management companies to establish working relationships.
• Create and maintain liaison with DHS Housing Placement Unit.
• Oversee landlord and management company compliance with housing laws, building codes, and lease agreements.
• Work with Case Management to identify clients who are housing ready.
• Resolve crises or conflicts with landlords and management relationships.
• Ensure fair housing standards are maintained in securing apartments.
• Develop and maintain a database of available housing options.
• Identify new housing opportunities through ongoing networks.
• Prepare and coordinate reports related to housing codes and compliance.
• Inform Case Management of unit readiness and client issues.
• Prepare housing packages (e.g., HRA’s 2010E Application, HUD VASH, Section 8) and collaborate with Case Management on applications and documentation.

Experience, Education, and Special Requirements

Experience should include negotiating lease agreements with landlords or management companies and providing housing for populations with special needs. Knowledge of applicable housing and disability laws and codes is essential. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
