Job summary

The City of San Diego is seeking a Deputy City Attorney for the Housing Protection and Civil Code Compliance Unit. The position reports to the Chief Deputy City Attorney of the Unit and handles civil prosecutions for City departments, with a focus on land use, safety, and code enforcement.

Responsibilities include drafting complaints and briefs, managing a caseload, training inspectors, and representing the City at meetings and hearings.

Responsibilities

• Civilly prosecute a wide range of violations referred by City Departments, including Building and Land Use Enforcement, Fire Department and Police Department actions.
• Litigate all aspects of a lawsuit from filing through appeal, including drafting complaints, briefs, motions, discovery, and other documents.
• Research and write legal memoranda for litigation and land use enforcement issues.
• Independently manage a caseload.
• Train City inspectors on code enforcement and other legal issues.
• Attend meetings with City personnel to problem-solve issues and accept cases.
• Attend community meetings and coordinate investigations with City Attorney investigators, law enforcement, and regulatory agency personnel.
• Respond to California Public Records Act requests and appear at City Council meetings or administrative hearings.
