Job summary

California State University, Sacramento is seeking a Housing Plumber to perform journey-level plumbing work on campus, including maintenance, repair, sewer and storm drain work, and layout and installation on new and remodeled projects.

This full-time, on-site role requires knowledge of plumbing methods, building automation, safety regulations, blueprints, and the ability to teach others. The position offers a structured schedule and CSU Total Compensation benefits.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repair of campus plumbing fixtures and equipment.
  • Clear sewer lines and storm drains.

  • Inspect construction and remodel projects.
  • Layout and install plumbing on new in-house construction and remodeling projects.

Job description

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Housing Plumber performs the full range of skilled journey‑level plumbing work, including maintenance and repair of campus plumbing fixtures and equipment, clearing sewer lines and storm drains, reviewing construction and renovation project drawings for compliance with campus standards and applicable codes, performing inspections on construction and remodel projects, and laying out and installing plumbing on new in‑house construction and remodeling projects.

Work Hours and Location

Full‑time, Monday‑Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Work hours may include evenings and weekends, depending on departmental needs. The position works on‑site.

Salary and Benefits

Salary range: $5,998 – $6,492 per month (Step 1–5). Benefits available; see CSU Total Compensation for details.

Minimum Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge of plumbing trade methods, materials, tools, and equipment. • Understanding of building automation systems, storm, and sewer lift stations. • Awareness of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations, including California State Plumbing codes.

Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
  • Knowledge of operating building automation systems, storm, and sewer lift stations.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade, including California State Safety Orders and California State Plumbing codes.
  • Ability to make rough sketches of plumbing installations and read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi‑skilled assistants.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with a diverse population, including campus students, faculty, and staff.
  • Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Progressively responsible plumbing experience.
  • Completion of a plumbing apprenticeship.
  • Willingness to perform asbestos, lead, and mold abatement with proper training.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to frequently move, transport, or position equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear appropriate protective equipment as needed.
License/Other
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
