Job description

We have a Direct Hire Opportunity with our client, a Berkshire County non-profit organization. They are seeking a Housing Inspector to conduct inspections of residential rental properties participating in state and federally funded housing assistance programs. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that housing units meet health, safety, and housing quality standards while supporting positive relationships with landlords, property owners, and program participants.

Property Inspection & Compliance
  • Conduct initial, annual, special, and follow-up inspections of residential rental properties.
  • Evaluate units for compliance with housing quality, health, safety, and habitability standards.
  • Identify deficiencies and document findings clearly and accurately.
  • Prepare inspection reports and ensure timely communication of results.
  • Monitor inspection schedules and ensure required deadlines are met.
  • Assist landlords and residents in understanding inspection findings and corrective actions.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of applicable housing regulations, inspection requirements, and housing quality standards.
  • Utilize agency software systems and databases to document inspections and maintain accurate records.
  • Participate in inspections conducted on behalf of regional housing programs when necessary.
Customer Service & Communication
  • Serve as a professional point of contact for landlords, residents, property owners, and program participants.
  • Explain inspection processes, requirements, and compliance expectations in a clear and objective manner.
  • Respond promptly to telephone and email inquiries.
  • Coordinate with housing program staff to ensure timely follow-up regarding inspection results and compliance issues.
  • Maintain professionalism and impartiality when working with diverse populations and housing providers.
Reporting & Administration
  • Maintain detailed electronic records and inspection documentation.
  • Prepare reports and compliance-related data as requested.
  • Track inspection outcomes and support agency reporting requirements.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training programs, and professional development activities.
Qualifications Required
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel throughout Berkshire County.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and basic computer applications.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with team members.
  • Housing Quality Standards (HQS) certification is required within one year of hire.
  • Training and certification support will be provided.
Preferred Experience
  • Preferred Experience in property management, facilities maintenance, inspection services, construction, building trades, code enforcement, housing programs, or a related field.
  • Human services, customer service, or community-based experience.
  • Familiarity with housing regulations, building standards, or compliance programs.
  • Housing Quality Standards (HQS) certification or willingness to obtain certification within one year of hire.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent local travel throughout Berkshire County.
  • Ability to enter and inspect residential properties, including basements, attics, and upper-level units.
  • Ability to climb stairs and navigate a variety of indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to walk extended distances as part of inspection activities.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds when necessary.
  • Ability to work safely in varying weather and property conditions.
