Job summary

California State University-Sacramento is seeking a Groundsworker to perform general gardening maintenance across campus facilities. The role includes event support, on-site work, and adherence to safety practices.

The position is full-time, on-site, with hours 7:00 AM–3:30 PM, and may require weekends or irregular shifts. The anticipated hiring range is $3,461–$4,056 per month, with the CSU range up to $4,752 and eligibility for overtime as a non-exempt employee.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or related manual labor.

Position Summary

Under lead work direction of the Lead Groundsworker and general supervision of the Director of Housing, Facilities Operations and Construction and in accordance with established schedules or periodic instructions, the Groundsworker performs general gardening maintenance work in various areas of the campus, including parking lots and structures, for the purpose of preserving the campus grounds in a healthy, attractive, and safe condition. Incumbent assists with event support including preparation and clean-up.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,461 per month (Step 1) - $4,056 per month (Step 9)

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,461 per month (Step 1) - $4,752 per month (Step 17)

Salary step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge:

Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.

Abilities:

Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Experience:

One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.

License:

Some positions may require possession of a valid California driver's license.

Required Qualifications

• Experience with general landscape maintenance, planting, cultivating, and fertilizing.

• Excellent customer service skills, with a commitment to quality workmanship and attention to detail.

Licenses:

• Possession of a valid driver’s license and maintenance of a good driving record.

Work Schedule Requirements:

• Ability to work weekends, early work shifts, and/or other changes in work schedule.

Condition Of Employment:

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in swimming pool maintenance.
• Ability to perform light irrigation repair work.
• General knowledge of plant materials utilized in the landscape field and that are appropriate to this climate zone.
• General understanding of turf care, including fertilizer and soil amendment applications.
