Job summary

Valparaiso Family YMCA is seeking a part-time Housekeeper to support our cleaning team and maintain sanitary, welcoming spaces for members. You will be responsible for routine cleaning, managing supplies, and ensuring safety protocols are followed during each shift.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, reliability, and the ability to work independently. Experience in janitorial work is preferred, with opportunities for certification assistance and program discounts as benefits.

Responsibilities

• Maintains cleanliness of all building areas, including mopping, sweeping, disinfecting toilets and sinks, and vacuuming.
• Perform deep cleaning tasks as assigned and handle heavy-duty scrubbing of floors and locker rooms.
• Maintain and organize equipment, supplies, and closets; report damaged items and low stock.
• Provide emergency cleaning promptly following safety guidelines and report accidents or hazards.
• Follow YMCA policies, participate in required trainings, and respond to emergencies as needed.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Housekeeper supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through cleanliness, healthy living, and social responsibility. This part-time position supports the Housekeeping team by taking care of the Y’s general cleanliness to provide tidy and sanitary amenities to our members.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Maintains cleanliness of all areas of the building and grounds. This includes but is not limited to: mopping, sweeping, cleaning mirrors and windows, disinfecting toilets and sinks, countertops, chairs and tables, vacuuming, .
• Perform deep cleaning tasks when assigned.
• Performs heavy duty tasks, such as scrubbing floors and cleaning locker rooms.
• Maintain and organize equipment, supplies, and closets. Notifies supervisor of any damaged or broken equipment or when supplies are low.
• Provides emergency cleaning services promptly, and in accordance with safety guidelines.
• Follow emergency procedures and safety precautions. Follow procedures for
• reporting all accidents, incidents, and hazards.
• Adhere to all policies, rules, and regulations as outlined in employee handbook and other communications. Obtain and maintain required training(s).
• Ensures building and property is secure during shift and reports incidents and hazardous conditions to supervisor.
• Cleans up blood or bodily fluids which could contain blood borne pathogens. Training will be provided.
• Accept additional assignments as deemed appropriate, within the scope of the job description.
• Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations. Obtain and maintain required training(s).
• Performs other duties as assigned.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Self-starter, ability to work independently.
• Dependability and a strong work ethic required.
• Previous work experience in janitorial or other cleaning positions preferred.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal to communicate with staff, members, and vendors.
• CPR/AED/First Aid certification or ability to obtain certification within 45 days of employment. Training is provided by the Valpo YMCA.

SALARY:

Minimum starting rate of $13.00 an hour

Starting rate based on experience

SCHEDULE:

Part-time

Weeknights 6 PM - 11 PM
