The Housekeeper is responsible for performing the day-to-day activities of the Housekeeping Department to assure that our Center is maintained in a clean, safe, and comfortable manner in accordance to Federal, State and Local policies.
Job Functions

Duties And Responsibilities
- Perform day-to-day housekeeping functions as assigned
- Clean and polish furnishings
- Clean, wash, sanitize restrooms
- Clean and wash windows and mirrors
- Clean floors, to include sweeping, dusting, damp/wet mopping, stripping, waxing, buffing, disinfecting, when assigned
- Vacuum floors, shampoo carpets
- Empty trash cans and discard infectious wastes into appropriate containers.
- Clean walls and ceilings by washing, wiping, dusting, spot cleaning, disinfecting, deodorizing
- Clean hallways, stairways, and elevators
- Remove dirt, dust, grease, film, etc., from surfaces using proper cleaning/disinfecting solutions.
- Deep clean, disinfect patient’s rooms upon discharge and prepare room for new admission
- Perform isolation cleaning procedures in accordance with established infection control procedures
- Ensure that equipment, tools, supplies, etc., are properly stored at all times, as well as before leaving such areas for breaks, meal times, and end of the work day.
- Ensure that all products are combined in instructed ratios and stored according to instructions
- Report all accidents/incidents to your supervisor no matter how minor they may be. Such occurrences must be reported on the shift in which they occur
Personnel Functions
- Follow work assignments, and/or work schedules in completing and performing your assigned tasks
- Must report to and work the floor or area assigned- flexibility is required
- Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit and shift
- Report all complaints and grievances made by the patient
- Notify the directed personnel when you will be late or absent from work per Center’s policy
- Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals to your supervisor.
Staff Development
- Attend and participate in scheduled training, in services and educational classes
- Attend and participate in scheduled orientation programs and activities
- Maintain Relias learning
Safety and Sanitation
- Wash hands before and after performing any service
- Follow established safety precautions in the performance of all duties
- Keep excess supplies and equipment off the floor. Store in designated areas
- Before leaving work area for breaks, or at the end of the work day, store all tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Report all hazardous conditions and equipment to a Manager
- Report all safety violations
- Follow established smoking regulations. Report all violations
- Follow established isolation precautions and procedures
- Follow established procedures in the use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
- Wear and/or use safety equipment and supplies
- Report missing/illegible labels and SDSs to your supervisor
Equipment And Supply Functions
- Use only the equipment you have been trained to use
- Operate all the equipment in a safe manner.
- Use only the equipment and supplies necessary to do the job. Do not be wasteful
- Report defective equipment to a Manager
- Inform your Manager of your equipment and supply needs
Patient Rights
- Know and practice the Center’s policy on patient’s rights
- Maintain the confidentiality of all patient care information
- Ensure that you treat all patients fairly, and with kindness, dignity, and respect
- Knock before entering the patient’s room
- Honor the residents’ personal and property rights.
- Inform resident when it is necessary to move his/her personal possessions during cleaning procedures.
- Report all grievances and complaints made by the patient to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse
- Report all allegations of patient abuse and/or misappropriation of patient property to Nurse Supervisor
- Working Conditions
- Works throughout the Center
- Moves intermittently during working hours.
- Is subject to frequent interruptions.
- Is involved with patients, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
- Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset patient, family members, personnel, and visitors
- Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
- Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.)
- Attends and participates in continuing educational programs
- Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the work day, as well as to reactions from dust, disinfectants and other air contaminants.
- Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions
- May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals
Specific Requirements
- Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patient, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public
- Must possess the ability and willingness to work harmoniously with other personnel
- Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm
- Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices
- Must not pose a direct threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace
Physical And Sensory Requirements
- Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day
- Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner
- Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position
- Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met
- Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with patient, personnel, and support agencies
- Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
- Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds. Requires pushing of carts
- May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of patient during emergency situations.
Full-Time Position
Hours: 9:00am to 5:30pm
*Must be willing to work weekends*
