Position Information

Title: Hourly Transit Driver/ Bus Operator

Department Summary: Facilities Management is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all University buildings, grounds, vehicles, waste management, and central steam operations. The FM Staff are an integral part of our University Community, dedicated to facilitating the requests of the entire campus while maintaining the University’s high standards of excellence.

Position Summary: A BSU Transit Hourly Bus Operator is responsible for operating buses in a safe and efficient manner. The operator is responsible for the safety and well-being of themselves, their passengers, and all other people on the road, primarily transporting students to and from classes and other Bridgewater State University Campus locations.

Equipment: Operators will operate vans, cut-away buses, Ford minibuses, low floor Gillig buses, two-way radios, wheelchair lifts, MDT computers, and other necessary equipment. Fareboxes are not equipped, and BSU Transit is free to the public.

Safety Standards & Practices: Operators will be required to read and understand safety standards and practices for operating BSU Transit vehicles and equipment involved in job tasks. They must continuously learn and follow all new procedures, regulations, and safety requirements.

Communication: All operators must effectively use oral and written communication in performing their duties.

Supervision Received: Staff Associate, Transit Manager; Associate Director of Facilities Management.

Position Type: Temporary

Responsibilities:

1. Provide safe and efficient transportation for BSU Transit passengers.
2. Operate ADA vehicle lifts and secure mobility devices.
3. Operate buses on scheduled/shift times.
4. Pick up passengers as necessary.
5. Respond to medical emergencies and injuries to passengers.
6. Maintain buses and vans per policies, including disinfection and cleaning.
7. Fuel buses as necessary.
8. Conduct post-trip inspections and check for vehicle damage.
9. Report all issues to appropriate personnel.
10. Attend safety meetings and required training.
11. Maintain a professional appearance and wear closed-toe shoes.
12. Maintain necessary operator records.

Required Qualifications:

1. High School Diploma or G.E.D.
2. Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements.
3. 2 years previous commercial driving experience; on-the-job training required.
4. Compliance with BSU Transit rules regarding DOT medical certificates and drug testing.
5. Safety-conscious and attentive to traffic and road conditions.
6. Excellent driving skills and a reputable driving record.
7. Willingness to attend all required training and meetings.
8. Ability to remain focused and calm in various situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Currently CPR certified or capable of receiving certification.
2. Familiarity with BSU Transit policies and routes.
3. General knowledge of Bridgewater State University and surrounding areas.

Work is performed in the field, operating the bus in various weather conditions. Operators are exposed to noise, fumes, and various road conditions. BSU Transit adheres to FTA Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations and has a zero-tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol.
