Job summary

The City of Walnut Creek is seeking part-time Sport Coaches to join the After School Sports Division of the Arts and Recreation Department. The coaches work at middle schools to teach, mentor, and prepare student athletes for recreational and competitive sports including basketball, volleyball, cross-country, flag football, and other activities.

This role is non-benefitted, with less than 20 hours per week on average, and peak seasons around 35 hours weekly over a 10–12 week span.

Responsibilities

• Plan activities to maximize every practice.
• Develop curriculum that is sequential and age-specific for the sport.
• Demonstrate drills, exercises, and basic routines.
• Monitor the playing area to maintain a safe environment.
• Develop schemes for competitive games.
• Set up and break down sport-specific equipment before and after practices.
• Travel to away locations for games and tournaments following City protocols.

Job description

Candidates should display a strong work ethic, good communication skills, and the ability to support and lead middle school athletes through competitive challenges by demonstrating good sportsmanship.

Compensation

The hourly wage range is $18 - $35. Placement in the range will depend upon the level of education and experience.

This is an ongoing hourly, and non-benefitted position working less than 20 hours per week on average over the span of a year. During an average sport season, which is about 10-12 weeks long, coaches would work up to 35 hours per week.

Reporting directly to the Program Coordinator, the Sports Coach performs a wide range of duties as assigned. The most frequent responsibilities include:

• Being on time and planning activities to get the most out of every practice;
• Developing curriculum that is sequential and age-specific for the sport;
• Demonstrating drills, exercises, and basic routines;
• Monitoring the playing area to maintain a safe environment;
• Developing schemes for competitive games;
• Setting up and breaking down sport-specific equipment before and after practices, and
• Travel to “away” locations for games and tournaments following City protocols.

Any combination of training and experience that gives a person the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the job successfully will be considered qualifying. A highly qualified candidate will have previous coaching experience at the youth or middle school age level.

Special Requirements

• Must be at least 15 years old at time of hire;
• Possession of, or ability to obtain upon employment and with support from the City, CPR and AED Certification;
• Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to employment, a valid Class C California Driver's License, and a good driving record.
