About the Role
The Mantissa Hotel, a 17-room independent boutique hotel in downtown Hartsville, SC, is hiring a General Manager to oversee daily operations and serve as the senior-most leader on property. This position reports directly to the hotel’s ownership group and is responsible for the full scope of leadership, operations, compliance, and financial performance.
This is a hands-on role without multiple layers of management or external brand oversight. The General Manager serves as both the operational head and the sole liaison between hotel staff and ownership.
Position Summary
This is a unique leadership position in that the General Manager reports directly to the ownership group, which also serves as the employer, with no third-party management company in place. The GM is the highest-ranking authority on property and serves as the operational head and primary liaison between the hotel and ownership.
All employees, contractors, vendors, and any individuals affiliated with ownership who perform work on-site are accountable to the General Manager. To maintain a unified chain of command and operational clarity, no individual—regardless of personal or professional relationship to ownership—may provide direction to staff, conduct oversight, or request reporting outside of the GM’s knowledge or involvement.
The GM is empowered to lead the hotel in accordance with law, policy, and the strategic goals mutually agreed upon with ownership.
The Mantissa Hotel operates without multiple layers of management or corporate oversight. As General Manager, you are expected to lead by example—remaining visible, accessible, and responsive to both team members and guests. This includes regularly supporting front-line operations and, when needed, stepping in to assist or temporarily fill hourly roles across departments. Your presence, flexibility, and hands-on approach are essential to sustaining the hotel’s service culture and team morale.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide daily leadership to all hotel departments: Front Office, Housekeeping, Maintenance, etc.
- Maintain service standards and guest satisfaction through operational visibility and responsiveness
- Prepare, manage, and monitor hotel budgets in collaboration with ownership
- Oversee hiring, training, scheduling, and compliance with employment laws
- Address guest feedback and operational concerns in real time
- Monitor vendor performance, maintenance issues, and supply cost controls
- Represent the property in communications with the ownership group
Qualifications
- 5+ years of hotel operations experience; prior GM or AGM experience preferred
- Familiarity with independent/boutique hotel environments
- Proficiency in hospitality software (PMS, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.)
- Flexible availability including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergencies
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team with integrity and accountability
Organizational Reporting
This position reports directly to the Ownership Group of The Mantissa Hotel. There is no third-party hotel management company or brand oversight. The General Manager serves as the highest-ranking authority on property and the direct liaison between all hotel operations and ownership.
